I was walking with 2 dogs today (one mine, one a friends) and we encountered 2 bullmastiff-type dogs at a gate between the woods and a field. The other owner called his dogs back but was ignored. I signalled to my dogs to continue walking (in the opposite direction) when the 2 bullmastiffs can hurtling over. I stood by my dogs who had a bit of a sniff and looked as if they were about to walk on when the 2 bullmastiffs became very aggressive towards one of my dogs. My dog tried to hide behind my legs, which meant I got scratched by the other dogs.
I sent my dog across the field (he has a very good away command) and he waited for me at a distance. The owner of the 2 bullmastifs eventually got the attention of his dogs and moved away from us. He apologised and said that his dogs have a tendency to attack if they get within 6 feet of any other dog!
I then noticed that he didn't appear to have a lead for either dog and one wasn't even wearing a collar.
Do you think it is reasonable to contact a dog warden about this incident, even if only to warn other dog walkers in the area?

Yes. I would also report it as ASB to your local non emergency number, AND report it to your local Cllr. Unfortunately, for things like this, Councils respond to numbers and unless people do complain, they will not bother. By reporting it to the Cllr, you are also making them aware there is a problem and since they are the ones who ultimately control budgets etc it's important to keep on at them.

Yes, report it.

Its amazingly irresponsible to have a dog aggressive, off lead dog who doesn't have good recall.

I have sent an email and made a phone call.
My husband was furious to hear what had happened, I'm 36 weeks pregnant though so I wondered whether he was being overprotective/i was being a bit wimpy.
Glad to hear I'm not making a fuss over nothing!

Shock

Absolutely not!!

I think you did the right thing too. If your dog wasn't so well trained as to go away on command and wait, it could have been much worse.
