Thoughts on rescue dog?

We've been actively searching for a rescue dog for about 6 months now, and I finally feel I've found the one we're looking for. 3 years old and good with children, suitable for 1st time dog owners.
But she is a good 4 hour drive away! Is this just simply too long for the dog to travel?
Also she has previously suffered from pancreatitis. Is this a big problem do you think?
Many thanks for any thoughts.

Can't help with the pancreatitis but we got both our rescues from South Wales - a 10 hour round trip! We just stopped every hour on the way back and both our older dog and our puppy just slept the whole way back. To me it was absolutely worth the journey to get our fantastic dogs!

Hope everything works out :)

If this helps: my rescue dog was sent to me by angels. I was in the perfect place & environment for any kind if rescue (experienced owner living alone, large secure garden in far NW highland of scotland) and I visited 3 different shelters without finding 'the one' eve though I thought I would be taking home 6 dogs under the circs! if he's the fella for you that will be it, don't worry too uch about the logistics, and good luck xxx

sorry, what I meant to say was after the 3 visits I was called to take my Charlie boy home having never yet met him ( and living 5 hrs north of the Glasgow centre where he was) every day since then I tell him that Angels sent him to me x

I don't think 4 hours is too far to drive for the right dog.

However, check with the rescue centre what their normal routine is with new dog owners. Some places prefer you to meet the dog one day and collect another so that both they and you have time to think about whether you and the dog are a good fit.

Also, does the rescue have a homechecking service in your area? Most reputable rescues will insist on this before adoption goes ahead. Some rescues will accept for instance a homecheck done by another charity's volunteer, others are more specific and will insist on someone with experience of the breed - for dogs like BCs, huskies etc I think this is sensible as they have unique requirements.

Thanks everyone for the reassurances about the travel. Yes they will do a home check if I register my interest. What about the pancreatitis? Is this going to be an ongoing problem and what can I expect? Thanks again.
