Thoughts needed quickly please - out of hours vet or wait till Monday?

We took our dog to the vet on Thursday after she started limping. She had an open sore on her elbow caused by a dreaded grass seed. Vet thought she had removed the seed head and there was no need for anti-bs. We went away with some antiseptic to clean the wound with.

She's refused walks since and has been hiding in her cage feeling very sorry for herself. :( I've just had another look at her elbow, which she is still worrying over, and I think I can feel a lump.

What do we think? Out of hours vet, or wait till Monday? I don't have any transport and ooh vet is quite a way, hence my question. Third option would be a drop in surgery tomorrow morning, it's a train journey + walk away so not ideal, but I don't want her to get and infection. Or for the seed to travel...they do that, don't they? :(

Poor pooch.

Grass seeds are nasty, my dog had a couple last year but we managed to get them out ourselves and he wasn't seen by a vet.
It sounds as if your dog probably does need to be seen by a vet tbh. Would going tomorrow be easier than going today? If so, I'd leave it until then.

If both are equally as difficult, then I'd go today as you don't want it getting worse and you're likely to spend the say worrying anyway.

Catsmamma · 04/08/2012 13:03

I am surprised she didn't get a jab...our vet seems to do that for EVERYTHING! an anti inflamm and anti -b??

I probably plump for the drop in surgery tomorrow and try and beg a lift from someone.

What breed is she?? Just wondering if it's a drama prone breed.....we had a spaniel collie cross who was a right drama llama, and dh's childhood spaniel had them all very worried one night crying and pacing, whining ...the works...and he just had a seed in his ear.

kid · 04/08/2012 13:04

Where abouts are you?
My spaniel did the sad puppy eyes and held his paw up in the air to let everyone know he wasn't well Grin

Cocker spaniel, and yes she is a total drama queen normally - its the lack of drama that's worrying me! She has at least come out of her crate now to clean up as DS eats lunch, but she's not asked for a walk or barked at strangers coming to the door at all. She is usually a complete bloody nightmare!

We've had some incidents with grass seeds in the ear when she was younger (one requiring removal under sedation :(). Aside from vaccinations, though, she hasn't been to the vets for nearly three years (since we moved her to a raw diet).

Sorry kid, missed that. We're in Surrey.

We're new to the area so no one to beg a lift from unfortunately.

I was a little surprised that the vet didn't go straight for the jabs, as well. Our old one would have, but this new one seems pretty old school. She gave us a right old bollocking for not checking the dog's elbows after a walk...I didn't even know they were a danger zone!

Any local vets run an ambulance?

poachedeggs · 04/08/2012 13:19

She sounds really miserable. I'm a vet and I'd have no problems seeing her today rather than waiting til Monday - if she was just a bit lame then I'd suggest resting until then, but it sounds as though she's actually unwell. Best to be looked at I think.

Subarashii · 04/08/2012 13:35

Thanks poached, I think you're right. She's obviously feeling poorly.

Need to coordinate with DH, who's put atm. Perhaps the emergency vets know of some dog-friendly taxi companies. Otherwise it looks like we will have to wait for drop in tomorrow, as emergency vet is over an hour away (2 buses), it seems.

Less than 20 mins by car :(

I think this must be a spaniel thing....My cocker had one is his ear, which was stuck so far down, the vet had to put him under to reach it......£70 later, and he was Ok but had a nasty infection. He has now been clipped within an inch of his life so hopefully that might keep them at bay!

I hope your dog is feeling better now xx

Subarashii · 04/08/2012 15:44

We've decided to take her to the drop in tomorrow. Poor thing is definitely not right so we've been trying to keep up her spirits with extra biscuits and cuddles. Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

Did you go to the vets today?
I was wondering how she is.

Subarashii · 05/08/2012 21:18

Hi kid, yes we did, thanks for asking.

She had a couple removed from under the skin on each elbow, which she found very upsetting :(, and a jab each of anti-b and painkiller. She seems much happier now.

Apparently this can happen if they lie down in long grass a lot. It's also the first time in years she's had a long cut. Back to shaving it is! :o

Glad to hear she seems brighter. Grass seeds are crafty little things. My dog needs a trim but it will have to wait until I get back from holiday now. I'll trim his feet before I go but thats as good as I can do for now.
