she's 13wks and been going out since 20th june. she hates going for walks! ive never heard of a dog not wanting to go 'walkies' Confused

she will sit just out side the front door and not move, will only move if she spots something she thinks she can eat. so i walk infront and say 'lets go' in an upbeat voice waving a treat. she moves to get treat, looks for any thing edible - then sits again. :(

its quite frustrating, deffinately a patience tester!

when i get to the park/field (stones throw away) she's abit better walking but eats EVERYTHING, licks the floor, pulls towards wrappers etc. its made harder when my 2yr old DD wants to hurry up and get there, so she's moaning at me......

then......when were on our way home pup just pulls and drags and yaps!!!!!!!! whenever she pulls i stop - wait for her to sit- then go. but i take one step and she pulls. then do it all over again. ive even tried the turn and walk other way but doesnt do anything. then i got my DD moaning saying ''hurry up mum wana go home'', like reversed roles! Hmm

to top it off - as soon as we get in, pup goes straight out back and does her buisness!!! AAARRRGGGHHH............and breath

just needed to get it off me chest Grin

You have my sympathy. I have a nightmare puppy atm. He doesn't pull. He walks marvellously and then when you are least expecting it he dives up at your face. When you push him down he plays tug with his lead and refuses to let go. I bought a chain lead because dogs don't like biting chain. He bites the other dog's lead instead now. Or hangs off my coat sleeve Angry

He jumps over the dogs and gets tangled in their leads. He bites the other dogs (in play but they still don't like it when they're happily sniffing other dog's pee and then all of sudden they have a puppy three times their size hanging off of their ears)

He leapfrogs about on the end of his lead like a rodeo bull on speed if he sees something exciting (this could be anything from another dog to a leaf blowing in the wind)

He wants to kill me. I am sure of it.

This is a good way to train pulling. Start in the house where there are no distractions, then build up to walking in the big exciting world

Any tips on how to tame the puppy of baskerville would be appreciated. Before he succeeds in killing us both Grin

sympathy shared :) sounds exhausting Shock

I took a look at the link and will go back to basics. I walked her around the house on leash before she had jabs to go out and she was fine. she would walk when i said 'lets go' and when i said 'stop' she'd stop & sit. after a while i didnt have to say the commands, when i stopped she stopped.

I took her out earlier for her last walk and she cried & tried to jump up to pick her up the whole time and just wanted to pull home - i took her home deflated :(

if she see's someone - wether its a child or adult she dashes in the direction to get to them Confused so im not sure if she's scared of the big out doors, being so small or something else?

I got the dog to help me get out abit more but she's more of a hermit then me! Grin

13 weeks? Most pups don't go out until after last jab at 12 weeks and are just getting used to a collar and lead. She's too young for proper training.

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 05/08/2012 21:31

Don't waggle the treat. Hold it by your side to keep her attention. Reward her if she is walk nicely with you. At the moment you are rewarding her for coming to you after behaving badly.

Once she's realised the treat comes when she's trotting nicely adjust your paces. If she wants to go slow speed up and vice versa.

Also when she goes to lunge to grab something say LEAVE as soon as she is away from it, reward her.

It will get better Smile

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 05/08/2012 21:33

My pup was trained on the lead from the start. In fact the rescuer had leads on the litter when they were still with their mum. You can take pups out on the lead before their jabs as long as they are not anywhere that unvaccinated dogs have been.

AnotherLoad · 05/08/2012 22:19

she came with 1st jab at 8wks and had 2nd at 10wks, then out 11.5wks. I put collar on around the house to get her used to it when she did aventualy get out. indoors she was loose leash walking, stopping/sitting on command. she leaves her food until i say she can take it....

different story outside with distractions and all. she just wants to get back home and isnt always bothered about getting a treat. absolutely will try it that way see how it goes. i can tell her to leave til im blue in the face - she just turns deaf! i have to pull her away.

well today i took her out on a harness instead of collar (now harness fits!) she was great! Grin she was running around with no pulling and i actually enjoyed it for the 1st time. i just hope to get a repeat tomorrow - fingers crossed.

What breed is she?

It doesn't hurt to pull her away Smile

Mine is still a nightmare walking past the local chip shop Grin

One of my dogs hated walks as a puppy. I had to physically remove him from his bed in the morning, and practically drag him down the road. He improved slightly with age, but not much. Now at the grand old age of 6 I have stopped making him go. When he sees the lead he runs and hides right at the back of the kennel. I could drag him out, but it seems cruel, he obviously hates walks. He does his business in the garden, I feed him less to stop him piling on the pounds, and I try to get him to take a bit of exercise chasing a ball. He is a very boring dog, and would probably be happier living with an old lady who would let him sleep in the living room all day every day and never move. If anyone wants a dog like this pm me Grin

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 05/08/2012 22:35

Panic my old girl got like this. The weather had to be acceptably perfect for her to consider leaving the house Grin

AnotherLoad · 05/08/2012 22:55

she's a pomeranian, im guessing being small and being dragged out to the big open world can be scary....but....

when looking into finding a dog - the breed appealed to me for being extravert, lively, therapy dogs (im recovering from depression) needed to get out the house more etc...

but this pooch is more of a hermit then me Grin lol

as for the weather, she dont like heat wave (dont blame her in that coat!) and she wont move for nothing if its raining Hmm

What training classes are you signed up to?

Agree with previous poster that she's too young for such particular training but when you're taking her to classes she will learn to cope with distractions.

Also agree with the treat thing. Hold it on your hand abovef her head and walk briskly. If she wants the treat she has no choice but to walk with you. Waggling it at her and then giving it to her just teaches her to bugger about because you'll reward her for it. Your instructor will be able to show you better than I can describe it!

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 05/08/2012 23:13

And that's in your hand above her head, obviously. On a short lead if possible so she has to walk directly beside you, to start with, and then you can loosen the lead in time.

(Sodding iPhone).

AbsolutelyNotHoneyDragon · 05/08/2012 23:35

I remember now, I've seen your other threads, you're doing well. I have no doubt you'll overcome this soon too Smile

AnotherLoad · 06/08/2012 19:03

lovemy dog - not signed up yet :( cant find any in my area close enough. id need some one to look after my toddler, so cant travel too far if the classes are an hour, plus to and from classes bus journey time.... would really like to get her to classes though.

absolutely - the harness has made all the difference! todays walks have been great, no pulling or crying.... yay Grin

forgot to add that i have held the treat at my side (indoors first) and she was fine with walking beside me :) outside was also good, will get better in time.
