Hi, we are going to look at another dog on Sunday but i have to take my dog with me (to see if they get on ok), its over an hour in the car and my dog has only ever gone as far as the vets. She doesn't get travel sick but gets upset (whimpers and gets stressed), is there anything i can give her to keep her calm whilst in the car?

Thanks Lemar- i phoned the vet and they sugested D.A.Ps but i cant get any to be delivered in time and its very pricey. I might pop in to pets at home tomorrow to see if they have anything. We are going to take her out again tomorrow and try and get her used to the car, i think she's just anxious as she's not used to it (has only been in the car to go to the vets), hopfully we can find something that works before sunday xx

Thank you, hopfully i can get some tomorrow, will try it out on a short journey first. I don't want anything that makes her too sleepy although something that makes her slightly less hyper would be good Smile, i need her to be calm when we get there to meet the other dog (i really want them to get on so i can have her). So excited about the possability of getting another dog so dont want it to be a wasted journey (dont want to stress her out for nothing).

I went to 'pets at home' this morning and they were very helpful (not) Grin, explained the situation and the girl on the till reccomende a travel sickness pill Hmm, took me 20 minutes to explain 'that my dog does not get travel sick, she just gets anxious and worked up', they didn't have much in stock and i refused to pay £30 for DAPS. We ended up buying 'johnsons calming tablets' i have to start giving them to her straight away as they take a few days to take full effect, i gave her 2 tablets this morning, at lunch time we took her out in the car (a bit further than yesterday) and she wasn't half as bad as yesterday, we took her for a long walk and she managed to walk past several people withut wanting to jump up and lick them to death and on the way home she almost fell asleep. We will try her a bit further tomorrow and then Sunday we have the long drive, i might stop off half way and walk her (let her have a run) so she's not too hyper at the other end. Hopefuly it wont be a wasted journey.

FWIW, do you think this is a good idea? If you are specifically taking the dog to see how it gets on with the potential new dog, then surely the dog needs to be how it would be on a normal day in your house (i.e. slightly hyper)?

If you take it along mildly sedated, then you will only know how well they react to each other when the incumbent dog is sleepy.

if you genuinely want to know how well they get on, then you will have to take the dog in the car in its usual state, surely anything else will be a pointless exercise?
