My dog has testicles! Now what?

We've had this dog for 5 years and thought he had been neutered. The rescue centre said he had been done and there were no balls to be seen. He was estimated to be 2.5 then so must now be 7 or 8. This morning he was lying in the sun and I saw a suspicious bulge at the base of his penis - lifted his hind leg and saw testicles. They disappeared again within minutes, but they were definitely there. I prodded them and he stuck his willy out. I was flabbergasted.

Now, Mum saw this when she was dog-sitting about a year ago and we had the vet check him over, but the vet couldn't find anything definite. He was reluctant to do anything - said undescended testes would mean a much bigger operation than normal neutering, and as we hadn't personally seen them then there was a chance Mum had been mistaken. He also said the dog would most likely be sterile (this was in the context of Mum adopting a female puppy) so not to worry about him fathering puppies.

However, it explains so much about his behaviour over the years - most notably his reaction to bitches in heat. You may think we were dreadfully slow on the uptake, but I'd never owned an entire dog before and we had been told he'd been done, so didn't really question it!

My question is: would it be worth neutering him now? It would be a bigger operation and he's getting on a bit. Would his behaviour change? He can be aggressive towards other dogs and sometimes displays protective/aggressive behaviour towards strangers as well, particularly when DH isn't here and it's just me and 4 month old DD.

In my opinion if he has undescended testicles it is vital that he is castrated. There is a much higher risk of testicular cancer in dogs that have undescended testicles. I would make an appointment to see your vet asap. It depends on where the testicles are as to how difficult the op.

There is a train of thought that dogs with undescended testicles can show more fear aggression as they have less testosterone to help them deal with situations. However in your case you really do have no choice but to have him castrated for health reasons and then work on his behaviour (which probably is not connected to his goolies at all!)

If your dog is insured or you are a member of dogs trust then you should have access to an online vet to discuss this.

I've no experience of undescended testes in dogs but we had our male neutered and it didn't stop his shows of aggression to other dogs.

He is insured - hadn't thought of that! I also didn't know about the link with testicular cancer. Sad The vet certainly didn't mention that a year ago. He's due his booster jabs and I need to make an appt for him anyway, so I'll be able to discuss it with the vet then.

Interesting about the fear aggression/lower testosterone levels. I suppose he might well be calmer without them.

Hope you don't mind me saying but you may not have seen his testicles but something else called the bulbus gland.

Have a look at these links

Reasons, you might be right. Hmm. Have made a vet appt for tomorrow - he needs his booster jabs anyway. It might be this gland, but he did follow Mum's bitch around with a face like a stunned ox trying to hump her when she was in heat. Will see what the vet thinks - hope he or she doesn't laugh too loudly if it turns out to be this!

My two boys sometimes get swollen glands when they need to urinate, it looks like two balls at the base of the penis. When they were puppies and had undescended testicles, the testicles could still be felt if you "rummaged" around that area... So maybe it is the glands if they appear and then disappear.
