If my Dad ever says to you "Look, over there, what's that?" while you are out with your dogs, don't do it!

I don't know why I fell for it. I grew up with him using that tactic to nick my sweets and later my fags or spare change. I should have learned by now.

I had Whippy out, off leash because her recall is reliable. I had Devil Dog with me on his longer lead, because I don't fully trust his recall in wide open spaces. We let him off only in fenced or secure areas.

I was looking for this imaginary wild animal he had spotted, when he said "Over there, look just coming over the sand dune now with Freya (his Whippet)" and there was bloody Devil Dog Shock

While I had been searching for this elusive wild animal he could not identify, he'd unclipped his lead Shock

He had a bloody good time though, he chased that whippet for miles and miles, it was an hour before he gave up but he came back Grin

I was so proud. He never strayed too far, when the whippet took him off too far he came back to me, at the end of the walk when we were nearing the road and I called him back, he came, when he went off tracking rabbits in bushes he came when I called him off [proud]

We're going again on Thursday. I won't bother with the long line this time. It was lovely finally being able to watch him run properly and being able to be like a real dog, if only I'd had the confidence to properly test him before now, we could have been doing this for years.

So..
Whippy was an angel and came back as usual
Devil Dog sort-of-lived-up-to-his-name and came back (admittedly after an hour)

And your Dad needs a smacked bum and no supper for putting you through the angst.

Learning curve indeed! Grin

Oh yes I felt physically sick for the first half an hour, and kept yelling "Where's me dog? Where's he gone?" only to realise he was trotting along behind me during a wee break from his chase the flying whippet game Grin

My whippy was never out of sight, always zoomie-ing around nearby. My dad's whippet kept taking Devil Dog up over sand dunes and out of sight but he always came back to us when she went too far.

That sounds great!

The first time I let my dog off he came hurtling back when I called, swerved passed me at the last minute, & off he went- crossed a couple of roads.

I couldn´t see him, flagged down a man in a van-no sign.

So I walked home thinking should I get my bike/ask a friend to help?

And just as I got near our road I saw his bum disappearing around the corner!

I thought he´d never be off a lead again.

Unfortunately he´d caught the scent of a female!

Doin are you sure your dad is not mine, he does that to me all the time and now after 38 years of it happening I STILL fall for it

Well done Devil Dog for coming back, tell your dad he is one naughty boy and should go sit on the naughty step Grin
