Over night toilet training. My 9 month old foster is fine during the day but wees every night.

I'm right to think that at 9 months old he should be old enough to hold it, no?

I also have to start setting the alarm at stupid o clock to let him out for a wee in the middle of the night don't I? Until he gets it

We go to bed at around midnight, so I'm thinking 4am alarm, then move to 4:30am after a few days, then 5am etc. Until he is going all night.

Sound about right? It's been ages since we had a puppy, it would be better for his forever home if he was trained ready to go to them.

Also we left the door open for him last night, so he could have gone outside, if he wanted to but didn't. In which case is it that he needs a wee or is it SA?

Well, I think in general they should be able to go through the night by 9 months. What breed is he out of interest?

Good idea to do the alarm and work on from there, if it continues though, it could be SA and I have no idea how you would deal with that.

Does he have paper or anything on the floor? If so, maybe move it outside, or remove it completely. Or is he just doing it where he feels?

Bit of a nightmare for you though!

No I don't agree with paper training. I think it just trains them to pee in the house.

It is always at the door, although never at the door to the yard where he should go, always the door leading to us.

He's a lurcher. I'm not sure what he's crossed with, the foster place never said. I don't think they know. He's been in kennels for three weeks before he came to us so is used to just going whenever/wherever, but he's fine during the day when we are in.

This is him, he's called Shadow and bar the weeing on a night he is an absolute angel.

Oh he is beautiful!!

tara0202 · 26/07/2012 09:51

He's a beauty :) with my weimaraner we would set the alarm and take him.into the garden. When he went we'd say toilet to teach him to go on.command.

He's probably just learnt bad habits being.couped up.in kennels. Hopefully he will get it soon. He should be able to.hold it at his age I'd have thought but maybe he needs a bit of reminding at the moment.

I'd try the alarm. At least the weather is ok, with my dog I was sat out in that garden in my pj's in the snow waiting for him to pee!

Good luck!

Oo what a beautiful boy!

I think your alarm clock plan and gradually moving the time forwards sounds like a plan.

It's either that or if you're sure he's actually physically capable of holding it, overnight crating in the hope he won't want to dirty his sleeping space (although contrary to common opinion that doesn't work for all dogs).

Personally if I were you, I'd stick with the alarm clock method. I feel for you though, I still remember standing in the back yard of our first house with our newest rescue at 4.00 am as she did everything she could to try and get me to play while I stood their yawning and freezing my bottom off in my pjs. Hmm Grin She was a pointy dog too, albeit a mini (whippet cross sheltie).

Peppa finally went all night from 6 months old. We did crate her from about 13 weeks after I stood in a little present she left en route to the bathroom. She never soiled or wet in the crate, but would start whining to pee at about 4 in the morning so I would get up to let her out. At about 5 months I started to ignore her for about 10 minutes instead of getting up straight away, and she gradually went longer and longer before whining until at about 6 months she was getting up with dh at 6.
Things which helped were: no water after 9pm and a last wee in the garden at 11 ish, and the crate was brill.

He's been clean at night for the last few days, hopefully it was just settling in issues.
