Is my dog a bit thin?

My 1 yo Springer puppy weighs 19kg- is this ok?

He's had his coat clipped (thanks, DP) due to the hot weather, and I can see his ribs!

He doesn't look emaciated or anything horrific, and he's having the max recommmended amount of Burn's dogfood divided into two meals.

He never stops bloody moving and has 2 good walks a day so is quite muscly round the shoulders and legs.

I googled it but can't really find a red book style chart- I saw a body shape one and he looks like the normal weight dog from the top and side, but I'm a little worried.

He is quite tall for a springer though; does this sound ok or should I give him a lunch again?

He's only 1 - he sounds perfect. And he's a springer! They do stay lean for their youth. My enormously tall one year old lab currently weighs 24kg and I can see her ribs too, but fully expect her to change quite a lot over the next 12 months. All her sisters have followed that pattern and I feel that during this period of mad activity and massive growth, it's a GOOD thing and helps to protect those delicate joints for the rest of their lives.

They don't really start muscling up properly until they get to about 18 months/2 years old IME, so by this time next year I expect he'll look pretty different.

If you'd like to see him build up a bit, increase his food intake a little and see what happens. Burns does keep dogs lean, so it would do him no harm if you're concerned.

You could always post a photo if you want a proper second opinion Grin.

Mine weighs 17 kg at just over a year. He does look skinny sometimes, but is full of bounce (of course, being a springer) and seems healthy. If I increase his food he tends to get the runs. Vet isn't worried.

He sounds perfect, i think the general guide is you should be able to feel but not see their ribs, however he is a puppy/teenager and that is OK. I wouldn't be adding to his food though.

Sounds spot on. My adult springer weighs 25kg which apparently is right for a male. I think a bitch is around 20kg adult size. I think.

StellarforStar · 26/07/2012 14:38

Phew! I was getting a bit worried there, I didn't want to be underfeeding him and making him unhappy :(

He is a very greedy boy, like all springers, and is currently drying off in the garden because I just gave him a quick shower with the hosepipe (no ban here yet) it's so hot...

I have a Springer too. He is almost 4. He is big for a Springer but he is only 17.1kg (i have just squashed him onto the scales) He looks much better than a few months ago, but he really never stops moving, I can see his ribs, he gets twice as much food as my collie.
He is all muscle and much too fit.Grin
If he is supposed to weight 25kg then I suppose he must be a bit thin

PuddinAforeDinner · 27/07/2012 08:33

Hi StellarforStar your Springer sounds about right.

If I remember correctly, those weights are really for the show type standard not working type, but please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I have two (pics on profile) and the oldest 18 months weighs only 16.9 kg but he is a small Springer.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe, your Springer is gorgeous.

I have a springer too. Hes 13 months and weighs 21Kg.

He was weighed on the scales at pets at home last week and their chart said for his breed, age and sex 21.5kg was ideal.

He seems quite chunky though compared to others, although I can feel all his ribs clearly and he has a definate waist
