Vets Fees for PTS

Namechangerdogowner · 22/07/2012 19:48

Can anyone give me a rough idea of what I can expect the vet to charge me to have my dog PTS?

I will want to leave her at the vets, but I don't want an individual cremation or anything fancy.

I'm planning to take her tomorrow and want to be prepared.

Ours was about £100 for the injection and cremation

Namechangerdogowner · 22/07/2012 20:02

Thank you.

DH is taking DD out for the day, so I'm planning to call the vets in the morning, hopefully they'll have an appointment free maybe at lunchtime or after work.

I'm very nervous, even though she'd very elderly and our reasons are good, I'm still concerned about the vets reaction, I've never had to do this before.

Why are you worried about the vets reaction?

maytheoddsbeeverinyourfavour · 22/07/2012 20:10

I'm sorry you're having to have your dog pts Sad

I hope it goes as well as it can. Be very kind to yourself xx

Ours was £85 for a small lab. We fell out with our old vets after my mum begged them to let her pay in instalments because she was suffering and desperately needed her suffering to end. She ended up loaning the money from me, or rather I forced the money into her hand. They'd used that vets for 25 years and they refused.

We found the new vets to be very sympathetic with us and understanding. What are your concerns?

Namechangerdogowner · 22/07/2012 20:22

Sorry, I have posted about my dog before but I've been putting this off.

My worry is that she looks fairly fit and healthy for a very elderly dog, however, her continence problems are so bad now I can't cope any longer, plus she's had strokes in the past and the falling over and walking into things is getting worse. I'm concerned the vet might says she's old but well.

It's come to a bit of a head as we're realised we really can't even go out for the day and ask my MIL or BIL to call in and take her for walks, as basically we'd just be asking them to come over to clean up, they come come around hourly and still end up cleaning the floor several times during the day - we leave the backdoor open when we're in the house and this week she's started coming back in from the garden to wee. She does in in her bed (both) and lays in it, snaps when I try to clean her up. She wees the full length of the kitchen several times a day, just does it as she does.

Basically I can't cope any longer and it's affecting family life, she's 15.

I don't think you need to w orry. Our vet was brilliant. Our old greyhound was unable to go for a walk as back legs were giving way, and was eating hardly anything. She mentioned stronger analgesia, but said we needed to consider the quality of his life.
Your mums old vet sounds awful
Hope it is not too upsetting for you tomorrow.x

Nobhead · 22/07/2012 20:29

I used to be a vet nurse and if someone came to us with your concerns we would very understanding- she is 15 and is obviously suffering with the falling over and incontinence. Don't be hard on yourself, she's old and has had a good life. Hope it goes ok.

Namechangerdogowner · 22/07/2012 20:30

TBH I think now we've made the decision I just need to brace myself and get it done.

DH says he doesn't want to be there, but he's completely agrees it's the right thing to do, so I'll call them as soon as they open in the morning.

sorry to hear this. I had one pts in may and it was 73 for the vet and 180 for individual cremation and ashes in casket, with brass name engraved.

higgle · 23/07/2012 14:15

Ours was £72 for the vet to come out to us at home and cremation. I gave her his unused medication back for safe dispossal and was quite surprised to get a credit for it on the bill, reducing the cost to £52. She was really lovely and kind, wish I could have an end as peaceful as that when the time comes.

TheCunnyFunt · 23/07/2012 19:57

I hope you're ok OP? I think your reasons are very vaild, it must have been an awful decision to have to make :(

I'm Shock at the price difference, at my vets I overheard a conversation between a couple that had just had their dog pts and the receptionist. To get their dogs ashes back in an urn would cost them £375. And judging by the size of the collar they were carrying it wasn't a big dog either :(

NameChangerDogOwner · 23/07/2012 20:21

I'm not great TBH, I'm desperate for dd and dh to come home, I'm dreading telling dd but at the same time I need a cuddle.

The Vet was great, didn't question our decision at all, but I still felt terrible, couldn't stop crying, but I stayed with her and had 5 mins alone with her afterwards.

The house feels really empty.

I still don't know how much it cost, they ushered me out afterwards and said to pay over the phone later, DH is going to call in tomorrow.

I keep running it over in my head but I still can't decide what to say to dd.

AuntPepita · 23/07/2012 20:28

How old is dd?

Oh and have a (((hug)))

TheCunnyFunt · 23/07/2012 20:36

Oh :( I'm so sorry, it must be so hard, stay strong for your DD Thanks

NameChangerDogOwner · 23/07/2012 20:36

She's 8 so old enough to be told the truth, she's going to be very upset, because of course we've had the dog all her life.

She knows she was very old and I've tried to prepare her, thinking one day it would just happen naturally.

NameChangerDogOwner · 23/07/2012 20:37

I'm expecting them home around 9pm, I'm jumping up at every passing car, trying to stay calm, but it'll be hard once I see them.

OP posts:
AuntPepita · 23/07/2012 20:39

It's hard. My DD was much younger when our cat was pts, so not sure how helpful my comments are, but I would tell her the truth. He was old, worn out, but is dead (has not gone to sleep), we can't see him anymore, but can always remember him.

AuntPepita · 23/07/2012 20:40

Oh, and let her know it's ok to be sad.

NameChangerDogOwner · 23/07/2012 20:41

Thanks everyone, I'm signing off for the night, hopefully they'll be here soon.
