Slippery Elm

I have been using Slippery elm on my dog with colitis and the results have been fantastic - thank you to all at MN who recommended it.

Can I ask where you get it from? - I have been getting it from Holland and Barratt but they only do capsule form and it is very pricey. I feel unsure to get it off the internet unless the supplier is recommended. Thanks again.

I buy the powder form from a local little independent health good shop. They bag it up themselves do you can get as much, or little, as you need. You might have a similar type of shop within reach.

oldqueenie · 21/07/2012 22:14

how many capsules do you use?

ceres · 22/07/2012 04:06

i buy it from local health food shop too.

slippery elm is brilliant, isn't it? our staffie has had colitis for abput 5/6 years now. he rarely has a flare up - we feed nature's harvest and mix slippery elm gloop into one meal daily.

Thank you all. Ceres I think it was your post that first introduced me to slippery elm so thank you sooooooo much. We haven't got an independent store locally but I will look a bit further afield. I honestly think this has saved my dogs life, not being over dramatic. His weight lose was horrendous and all medication from the vets stopped working over time. He is now putting on weight and has pickupable poos Smile. The vet does still not totally recommend slippery elm but he had to admit my boy is looking so much better than he ever hasSmile

Oldqueenie I was told to give 1/4 of a teaspoon per 10lbs of dog per meal. I open the capsules mix with warm water allow to cool and then add to food.

thanks cuebill. i was asking as i too have been giving ddog opened capsules mixed in hot water... just one a day (so about 1/4 teaspoon?)... and just guessed the dosage. she is only a small dog though so that's probably about the same as you suggested.... has made a real difference to her i think.

nice to hear the success stories! it is amazing that something so simple, cheap and natural can make such a difference.

it is also amazing how excited you can get about a pickupable poo!! or maybe that's just me.......!

Cuebill · 22/07/2012 18:42

Oh no not just you, we had a major red letter day the first time we could pick up a poo Grin 24th April 2012.

Even now that it is the norm I still smile whilst picking up........
