How to stop our dog chasing runners and barking at them?

Our dog does not have an aggressive bone in his body but I completely understand that the runners he chases when we are out on walks don't know this and that it can be really frightening for them. How do we get him to stop?

My rescue was like this, v high chase instinct. What worked was me being extremely vigilant and distracting him with a ball to chase whenever runners or cyclists appeared. I kept him on the lead if on a bendy path and couldn't see very far ahead or behind, still used the ball so he was rewarded for good behaviour.
It took about 4 months, now he completely ignores anyone going past.

Lots of leave it / recall training.
Not just when you see triggers but do it often and randomly. Leash and unleash randomly too so they don't associate coming back as the end of being off leash.

Take treats with you.
And lots of training.

I know this will raise some hackles, but I recently got an e-collar. It doesn't shock, just has vibrate or beep functions. I've used it about 4-5 times on lowest setting and it does stop him - the sensation puzzles him and so distracts him from the chase, and he then recalls ok. The last twice we've been out and a jogger has gone by I've just calmly said 'stay' and he's watched them go by without chasing. I then treat him. Today I didn't treat him and so he decided to trot off after the jogger (not hell for leather like he used to though), so I buzzed him and he stopped. Not totally there yet but it's working. Of course I feel like a pariah when we're out and hope no-one notices he's wearing it!

Please, don't use a long lead. They are not safe, and can cause accidents. what sort of dog is he?

MrsJayy · 12/05/2016 15:49

You can get a long line we have up to 10 meter one he chases cars bikes runners your dog could get over excited and bite somebody especially as instict kicks in and he could nip then you have a dangerous dog on your hands

I am a dog owner and my dogs don't chase runners.

I'm a runner too - and there are loads of dogs who chase. OP - you aren't alone!!

Most people tend to grab their dogs and they sit quietly whilst I run past.

If they are running around me I just let them sniff me as I run past. I don't find it a big deal at all.

If they bite, well that is a problem. Other than that, I don't worry about a barking dog.

We dont use the line out on daily walks we go to a field and he has a run about

Bubble2bubble · 12/05/2016 16:28

Dogs love runners. One of mine especially did, as he loves people and people who were running were the best thing ever.
I used a combination of things mentioned above - longline, recall training and using really good treats. A couple of years on, ddog associates runners with treats and will actually turn to me when he sees a runner coming :), though it did take us a while to get to this point.

Thanks everyone for suggestions, he's almost 2 he only started this a few months ago he's a jack Russell cross pug. He has perfect recall out with this situation he goes to agility is an almost perfect dog apart from the chasing runners and cyclist and barking at them..... Most runners are okay and as soon as they stop if they do so does he and he realises they are humans! It's hard going being vigilant on a walk when he used to be so laid back on a walk hes whistled trained and even that doesn't work! If I see them he will sit and wait for a treat I have also been using a squeaky toy when they pass and that keeps his attention however I worry will this be forever I have to do that!!! Should I do anything else? I don't want to use an electric collar and I've not been using a ball as I was told this increases his chase drive..... I used to use the ball launcher and I wonder if that's what increased the drive to chase....... Or is it the jack Russell in him! Thanks everyone Smile
