Dog ate chicken bone

I'm probably being silly but I'm a bit worried. My toy poodle ate a chicken bone he found on the street. He managed to crunch and swallow a bit before I got him to drop it. Little so and so! I gave him a piece of bread and he's drunk water. He seems fine and is currently stalking my auntie who is walking around eating a piece of cake! Chances of it splintering inside his stomach are pretty small, right?

I lost count of the number of cooked chicken bones my old boy snarfed before I had even spotted them on the pavement. Should be ok. Just be watchful but don't worry :) I THINK that in general the problem is as they are swallowing them, not once they have already done so.

Thanks for the reassurance. I thought once he'd swallowed it, he was pretty safe but thought I should check given I'm not very experienced. He's my first dog.

Try not to worry. These things usually pass through. When this happens to us, I just keep an eye that the dogs are eating and drinking normally, and sometimes I check their gums. To do this, you press their gums, and make sure they return to their normal colour in the normal time. It is a useful thing to do every now and again anyway so that you know what is normal for your dog. I don't think I've explained this very well! The gums go pale when you press them, and the blood should return pretty quickly. If there is a problem, this won't happen.
It is a good idea to get your dog used to having his mouth looked at and handled. Just remember to be very gentle and kind!
