Just being nosey, really. Does your dog work? What makes you a dog person?

Why do I have a dog ?

Both myself and DH grew up with dogs and always wanted one - after nearly 20 years together we finally got one - unable to before really both working full time -long erratic hours -then children came along .

I now work part time from home so she is my 3rd 'child' .

She is very much a 'stay at home dog ' Grin - duties include hoovering under the table and collecting socks - but I don't know where the socks go ! She also does 'coffee' with me - always find a coffee shop on way back from a long walk Grin.

She is always happy to see us and vice versa - I love walking her and she is so much part of our family .

I got my first dog to help me get over depression, after much discussion with dh and wth my counsellor, not saying that a dog would be a good idea for everyone in that situation but I was struggling with losing my job and being stuck at home alone and my youngest starting school, and she does everything I expected her to, she gets me out of the house, she keeps me company, she gets me excercise and I havent had tablets since we got her 2 and a half years ago. dog2 well we got him because havign adog is so great that we wanted another one. wouldnt be withoout them they are fantastic.

Our dog works with my DH. His role is largely supervisory but he also acts as a lap warmer, an escort on post office runs and a general stress reliever. When not in the office he enforces a no-fly zone over our garden and makes sure any animals on the television are kept at bay so they don't come through the tv into the house. He also catches flies and sits on spiders Confused.

Aside from that, he is loving, sweet, funny, cuddly, playful, loyal, a great reason to go on long walks, a friend to all and we absolutely adore him.

For company. For large, solid comfort. To make me feel a bit safer (ha ha our dog is defo not a guard dog.) For better mental health. To give my DCs the confidence in life I didn't have. To give an animal that has led a hard life a comfortable home.

I have grown up with dogs, moved out at 17 got my gorgeous boy he was there through a bad time in my life, I had a stroke, and when I came home he knew not to jump up at me and lay with me as I recovered, he sadly died when I was in labour at the age of 8.
We now have another dog, he is ds's little mate, his job is to clean up behind ds, let me know here is a cat outside by running in crying, and taking the blame for some things ds does (this week according to ds he did a poo i ds's nappy)
Cant imagine life without a dog in it!

We looked after a dog for a week as a favour to a friend going on holiday as I am not an animal person, I secretly thought it would put my daughters off owning one, they had been wearing me down and we had been through all the goldfish hamsters, rabbits ,guinea pigs phases unfortunately we were all upset when we had to give it back even me! so we ended up with one and after careful research we couldnt have got a more perfect dog she is a lhaso apso with the best nature ever, her job ,as see sees it, is to keep the garden free of magpies !

PaddingtonBare · 17/07/2012 19:30

Because she is the most gorgeous creature imaginable. Always had dogs as a child and am so happy my life allows us to have a dog now. My son adores her and, like another poster says, she does make a walk a whole lot better. Got a big doofus mutt - best decision ever. She is gentle, calm and kind - I really do love my girl!

wordfactory · 17/07/2012 19:44

I got ours for the worst reason...because my DC went on and on and on...

But she's a good girl and I'm glad. Most of the time Wink.

wordfactory · 17/07/2012 19:45

Oh her job seems to be to cover every last centimeter of the dining room floor in wee.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 18/07/2012 09:08

I have mine because she makes me laugh, is a great companion, entertains the kids for me, cleans up any stray crumbs or stuff the kids drop

BoyMeetsWorld · 18/07/2012 09:13

Our dog completes our family. He's stinky, dribbly, costs us a fortune, dictates where we can go on holiday and tries to eat visitors. But he adores us, cuddles us, gets us all out and about in the fresh air and stops us arguing by getting inbetween, climbing all over us and waggling his tail until we stop. We couldn't be without him. He's also an Undercover Secret Agent.

For the OP if you want to see a REALLY exciting working dog, check out textfromdog.tumblr.com/ . Any other dog owners on here will appreciate it too....is this YOUR dog? Grin

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 18/07/2012 09:47

My dogs are working dogs. The pupstar has gone off to be a police dog and is doing super duper at everything. She was born to work, its in her genes and I suppose it is her calling. Grin I am so proud of the training we did with her and that is shown in what she does, first time, every time with her new handler.

My Loofa (broken dog) is also working line, but he is happy doing obedience, agility and lounging on my sofa!

We did some emergency fostering for an old ex guide dog, who is 14 and he is now staying with us. He has beautiful manners and is an absolute angel.

My GSD guards the house when we arent in, he makes me laugh, he adores the kids and my husband and is a clown. The lab, doesnt bark or make any noise at all - with exception of farting and snoring! he brings calm, love and makes me realise how important it is to have a dog in the house. My oldie and my young boys are fantastic and part of our family.
