Just been for a walk. Have bought (very pricy ) retractable long line as got so tangles on normal one. He just keeps trying to chew it and going generally mad. If I put the chain lead on then
Attach longline to chain
Lead he is ok but I really want him to get use to
It without. I try off but he drops it, looks at me and then carries on. When I
Got him to sit and tried to take it off he got really aggressive and went for me . How can I sort this :((

your dog went for you?

how old is your dog?

where did you get it from?

how long have you had it?

what breed is it?

quoteunquote · 14/07/2012 12:13

has it gone for you before?

has it gone for anyone else?

or other dogs?

Stoney666 · 14/07/2012 19:19

Just me, he doesn't scare me. Golden retriever

he really should not be even growling at you let alone going for you.

D0oinMeCleanin · 14/07/2012 20:07

Oh fgs, the dog was scared. It is not uncommon for nervous dogs to be snappy, don't over react.

Retractable lines are shite and dangerous and the bain of my dog walking life. Is he like this with a normal nylon lead? If not I can bet that he reached the end of the long line suddenly and jerked his neck. The lead caused him pain, the lead must die before it hurts him again.

If you really want to keep using the retractable, to the annoyance of other dog walkers and pedestrians, then you need to desensitise the dog to the lead. Start by just holding the lead, wait until he doesn't react, let the lead trail along the floor near him, wait until he doesn't react (use treats to distract him if you have to), clip the lead on him but don't go anywhere, use treats to distract if you need to. Eventually you will be able to walk with it.

I can't even count the amount of near misses I have seen when retractables fail and the dog runs into oncoming traffic or attacks another dog. They're really not safe, imo. Not to mention the fact that they are hazard to other pedestrians and cyclists who might not see it and trip over it.

Thank you doing my dog is not violent he was just utterly pissed off on that long line. When on normal chain lead he is an angel. Will dump it thanks again x

Yep, another ditch the retractable! Goldens are big strong dogs and no way will you have enough lead control over him on one...don't know what D0oin's opinion on them are, but I swear by Halti type head collars for large dogs!

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 14/07/2012 20:55

Ditch the retractable. A because they are a bloody menace for you, your dog and the world at large. Also once it's retracted and lab/ Goldie with any nounce would bite straight throught it and bugger off anyway Grin

Stoney666 · 14/07/2012 20:58

Such a shame my trainers didn't tell me that Sad he is fab now
Just walked and no probs Grin

Little Sod Grin

Maybe it did work? If he's naughty wave the lead at home and say "don't make go there, dog" Wink

D0oinMeCleanin · 14/07/2012 22:16

Halti's are fine if you struggle to control your dog, but they're not a replacement for training to walk nicely on a lead. They can help with the training if you praise or treat the dog when it's behaving nicely on the lead.

Saying that both of mine were an embarrassment on todays walk. Children with us = all training out of the window and pull like a train to race the children Hmm Blush. Must work on walking nicely even when there are children with us.

Signet2012 · 14/07/2012 22:29

Mine hated retractable lead after he ran full pelt and st the end of his line pulled my shoulder clean out resulting in me dropping it. It then bounced along the ground while he ran about like a kid trying to avoid his arse being smacked it was hysterical if not painful. Went in the bin. I found chest harness style halti impossible it just gives him more strength. He had a big wide neck and a little head so collars slide off. I can only use a nose style halti. He is fine with it Grin

olympickibucket · 14/07/2012 22:35

I find the Gentle Leader a lot better than the Halti for dogs who pull. I walk other people's dogs, I only see them for one hour on weekdays, obviously I reinforce whatever regime the owner has for training, but the bottom line is I need to keep up to four dogs safe simultaneously.

olympickibucket · 14/07/2012 22:36

Agree Signet, the chest Halti (brandname is Loopi I think) is utter crap.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 14/07/2012 23:00

I a Kumfi. I was really apprehensive about using it with a half check collar Sad till I was shown how it worked. It was a godsend when my old Lab became impossible on the lead after she was attacked on it. A trainer taught me how to use it. After about 6 weeks I had my dog back, and only ever used it after that in the very occasional situation I knew she could be stressed and try to bolt on the lead.

It allowed me control of her so I could focus on her iyswim?

However for us it was very much a means to an end to help the dog and I - not a permanent solution.

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 14/07/2012 23:00

I once used a Kumfi (dogalter), sorry.

Stoney666 · 15/07/2012 06:48

I have been told by two trainers that he shouldn't be off lead when we are out on country walks (we live on downs) I have tried several long lines but we have ended up in dreadful tangles Grin so one trainer said about the retractable. £46 later and it's been a nightmare. If we road walk I have a chain lead which he is fine with and walk brilliantly to heel (unless he sees another human as he likes to lay on his back in the hope of some belly rubbingBlush)
