Are you SURE my dog isn't too thin?

Sorry to go on...it may be because I'm used to GSDs/Westie/Collie types which have longer hair.

I've uploaded 3 photos from today. He's 7½ months old now. I don't know how clear it will be from the photos, but I can clearly see all his ribs. Does he look healthy to you?

I was feeding him kibble according to weight. I'm just switching him to raw, by weight, of course.

A little thin..is he very active, lots of running etc? if so maybe his weight is fine.
I would take him to be weighed at the vet, they will tell you if he is ok or not.
Kibble weights are only a guideline. I find them quite far out, so maybe up it a little each week until you find he is stable.

Looks spot on to me. I think people are too used to seeing fat dogs (including many vets, whose opinion on weight and dietary matters I usually have no time for...!)

This standard weight chart is a useful indicator. I think to see the last rib or so and a nice tuck-up when the dog is standing at rest, and the outline of a few more ribs when the dog is at full extension or bending to one side, is about right.

Pups will go through phases of up-before-out and you may find that the raw diet will leave him more well covered than kibble anyway, I find that raw fed dogs often have better lean muscle mass.

It's hard to tell from pics. Yes he is on the lean side, but I'd also be looking at his condition, muscles and coat. If you and your vet are happy, then I think he's OK, especially as he looks as though he is part whippet?

PersonalClown · 09/07/2012 18:03

Looks fine to me.
You can see my Staffy's ribs all of the time. Vet says he's a lovely healthy weight.
Plus when he's walking/running you can see the muscle definition on him.

Takver · 09/07/2012 18:07

OK, this is a silly question, but how do you judge the weight of an extremely furry dog? He's a mix (and part longhaired podenco andaluz, so not a common dog to see here), and DH & I are really struggling to decide whether he's a bit on the thin side (DH's opinion) or about right (mine).

Lougle · 09/07/2012 18:11

From that chart, I'd say he's in the 'thin' category. He is very bouncy and active in the garden, which is fairly large. He'll sprint around with the westie chasing him, etc.

He's already 14.6 kg at 7 months old. Fully-grown breed average is 12-17 kg. So why does he look so thin?

Scuttle, that's interesting....he was sold as 'pure staff' and I met both his 'parents' but we have always had a question mark over whether he was indeed a full staffy. He's so tall, lean and long...certainly nothing like the Staffs we see on the school run, which are much stockier and barrel-shaped.

At 7 months it would not be unusual be in the 'thin' category - he's still growing. I agree not full staff, far too tall and leggy, beautiful with it though, very athletic looking dog. :)

ditavonteesed · 09/07/2012 18:57

he looks a lot like my eric, who at just over a year is starting to fill out a tiny bit, but not much can dtill see all hid ribs. he is a high energy dog and a gauky teenager at the same time. he will fill out. gorgeous dog, he looks very staff x jack russell to me.

Scuttlebutter · 09/07/2012 22:35

To me, that back end is pure pointy - look at the shape of the tail, and the back legs. Compare with say Lost in Wales, or Behind LockNumberNine, both of whom have whippies or whippy x. I must say he looks nothing like the many (adorable) Staffies I know and love, most of whom are much more barrel shaped and stocky. I'd say he's a JR x whippet, with possibly a dash of Staffie. Grin His colouring is also typical for a JR or Jackie cross.

As Boldly says, he is looking fit and athletic (except when curled up looking adorable on the sofa Wink). Put it this way, he certainly looks loved.. Smile

He is the most gentle boy...totally bouncy and back end goes like mad, but sooo quiet. Hardly ever barks. Always keen for a cuddle. My boy.

I am constantly being told my little whippety thingy is too thin (mainly by people who know little to nothing to mostly made up shit about dogs). She's just been at the vets for a check prior to being spayed.

The vet said she was an ideal weight. You are supposed to be able to see a few ribs. He also said because her coat her was so shiny, her eyes clear and her nose wet, she's active and alert and muscle tone was good he would have no concerns over the amount or quality of food she is getting. She is 'perhaps on the leaner side' but he'd rather see a slightly lean dog than an over weight dog.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 11/07/2012 23:14

I was just thinking he looks like a pointy until you see his head then he looks like a staff. How tall is he now? Tbh I think he looks fit, if you do feel the need to smuggle extra calories in you could try a peanut butter filled kong?

clam · 12/07/2012 16:39

I don't know if this applies to all breeds of dog, but mine has a thick curly/wavy coat so it's hard to tell at a glance how fat/thin he is, so the vet told me that you run your hands down both sides of his flanks and you should be able to feel his ribs without exerting any pressure from your fingers.

He's 15 months, 19" tall at the shoulder - long, long legs - and about 13.5kg. Had him weighed yesterday and the vet said he was obviously all air!

Lougle · 13/07/2012 22:41

I'm so jealous that yours stay still long enough to be measured!
