My dogs are trying their first raw chicken wings

10 year old Westie and 7 month old Staffy.

The Staffy touched the wing with his nose and dived back. Then he's gradually built up. He dragged it across the floor, but I'm hearing crunching now.

The Westie eats in the porch to stop the Staffy nicking his food. He seems to have got rid of the wing tip already.

It's quite exciting...it will be alright, won't it? Blush

Well...they're gone, and the Staffy just tried to nick the rest from the worktop, so I'll take that as a thumbs up Grin

It will be great, ours love them (see my toy in my profile eating a wing), when I divide a chicken for them there's a scramble for the wings :)

Kladdkaka · 07/07/2012 20:43

My westie wouldn't even chew one. It'd go down whole.

catsrus · 07/07/2012 20:52

It will be fine Grin

I've been feeding them for over 13 yrs I think - never had a single problem and none of my dogs teeth have ever needed any treatment since I started even though one of the dogs practically inhales them rather than chewing

I do remember the terror of first giving them to the dogs though!

Aquelven · 07/07/2012 22:38

Are they really safe?
I always thought you weren't supposed to feed chicken bones in case they splintered.
I do feed bones to my bunch but big, raw marrow bones.

BehindLockNumberNine · 07/07/2012 22:40

Aque, only cooked bones splinter. Raw bones are safe! My whippety lurcher loves them!

catsrus · 08/07/2012 00:37

yes Aqua - raw wings only!!

Lougle · 08/07/2012 01:36

How much should they get? Should they have other stuff too?

Our golden retriever is on a raw diet now and she loves her food, previously she was a very picky eater with most of her kibble going to waste. We've never had to throw away a raw meal as she enjoys it so much. She is very good and chews every mouthful so I'm not worried about bones getting lodged and causing a problem.

Lougle, if you decide to feed raw you must do your research as dogs need a certain ratio of meat, bone and offal. It's not difficult but you need to be sure they are getting the right mix. It's also a good idea to offer a variety of meats and not stick to chicken only unless your dog has an allergy to a particular meat. We also offer our dog vegetables, fruits, yoghurt and eggs in small quantities but I don't think that is really necessary we do it more as a treat for her as she enjoys it and I prefer giving this to processed doggy treats.

SophiaWinters · 08/07/2012 19:56

Forgot to say, dogs need around 2% of their ideal adult body weight in raw food but it can vary slightly so if you're feeding 2% and they seem to be putting on weight then drop it down to 1% or if losing weight then up it to 3%. Puppies need more than this so you'd need to research if you have a puppy.

thanks sophiawinters...I'll look into it :)

I gave my dog a raw chicken wing because his teeth are getting tartared but he swallowed it whole so it didn't do his teeth any good.
If you feed raw meat, where do your dogs eat? I don't want blood and fat wiped around the kitchen floor where the baby crawls.

SophiaWinters · 08/07/2012 21:45

It depends what she has for her meal. Sometimes it will be meat chunks and offal, that she'll eat out of her food bowl and doesn't mess on the floor as they're chopped into bite-sized portions. If it's something with bones, like chicken wings or thighs or a whole fish then she prefers to take it outside and crunch it up on the grass - she doesn't seem bothered by the cold or rain. I don't have babies or toddlers, with little ones crawling on the floor I think you'd need to be more careful and make sure it's mopped down after the dog has been fed. I remember when my two children were little, we didn't have any pets then, I did a lot of mopping with bleach to keep the floors clean.

SophiaWinters · 08/07/2012 21:48

To keep teeth clean you really want a larger knuckle bone that they can't swallow whole, they will do a lot of chewing and grinding on the bone which is what keeps their teeth healthy.

doggiemumma · 08/07/2012 21:51

is this ok then? i threw away some chicken legs last week after i took the meat off to make curry, could i have given them to my JRTs then?

catsrus · 08/07/2012 22:29

its not just the bones doggiemumma the key is Raw Meaty Bones, so bones with meat - which is why the wings are so good - of course chicken legs would do nicely too, with the meat on them Smile

BreadAndJamForFrances · 09/07/2012 20:37

Is it okay to feed raw chicken wings as a regular treat, alongside a tinned + mixer diet? My JRT gets a lot of cooked fresh meat as treats and as meals, probably only 50% of his diet is tinned dog food. He won't eat most treats, only really likes the dried chicken fillets, but loves his Kong or a bone he has to work at. And, is it okay to freeze the wings and give him 1-2 defrosted at a time?
TIA Smile
