Where do your dogs sleep?

Just interested really. As crates seem so popular these days I wonder if people continue to use them past puppyhood. Or if you've never used one, where the dog sleeps...

My boy sleeps in a massive crate beside my bed - he loves it, opens the door with his snout and trots in when I say 'bedtime'.

He used to sleep on my bed but he was restless and lay spread-eagled diagonally so I couldn't relax. We both sleep so much better now :)

YankNCock · 05/07/2012 23:26

Mine is in his basket with some vetbed fleece in the kitchen. He had a crate when he was a puppy, we got a bigger one when he was older, but really it was getting too small for him already by the time we put it away. He just wasn't going in there much, instead was dragging his bedding out on to the kitchen floor. Or sleeping in a laundry basket on top of clothes waiting to be washed if I'd left it downstairs!

2 year old jack russel is in a crate in the kitchen...he loves it in there and 9 year old cocker spaniel is just in the kitchen...

When i just had my cocker he had the run of the house but since having JRT i have a stairgate on the kitchen door as he is not to be trusted

TheGravyTrain · 05/07/2012 23:37

My GSD sleeps in her bed in the kitchen. She slept in our bedroom the first week we had her but other than that, she has stayed in the kitchen every night for the last 4 years Smile

PorkyandBess · 05/07/2012 23:39

On a sofa in sitting room. He is one. We never did crate.

He has a big luxurious dog bed, but only goes on there for a daytime snooze!

bronze · 05/07/2012 23:40

On her bed on Dhs side of the bed (on the floor)

BrianCoxhasSmellySox · 05/07/2012 23:49

HRH Pippin of Cox....

Has the run of the house, with the exception of bedrooms, during the day.

At night she is shut in the living room with access to the kitchen. She sleeps on the sofa.

She was crated until she was 1ish, but then the crate got in the way (small house) so she has a big bed with lots of DD's old baby quilts/blankets in.

On a Saturday night (the night before the weekly bedding change) she sleeps with me. She has to get under the covers and then lies the length of me, with her snout at armpit level Grin She is to be found in this same position when I am either ill, upset or hungover.

I love her!

Unfortunatley, when she gets to come in my room it means the cats do too! So I end up with Pip under the covers, Rosie on my shoulder and Bert on my hip! I don't sleep well on Saturday nights Grin

It is extra fun when DD decides to join in Shock

All three sleep either in our bedroom on the floot or on the terrace outside, if it is hot. I leave the door open so they can go outside if they need to.

Haven't crated them, even when pups. Nothing wrong with crating, just didn't feel the need. My girl dog used to love lying under our bed and she had all bits and bobs there in her 'den'

AnotherLoad · 06/07/2012 11:10

only had my pup a week, not crated and dont feel i will. she sleeps on my DD's old quilt in the kitchen. when she is trained and in a routine i will leave the door open so she can have run of house at night. I say that but it depends how it all goes! :)

booksandchoc · 06/07/2012 11:16

In our bed, under the covers.Angry I hate it, but he was a rescue dog who had a lovely elderly owner before us who let home sleep under her covers. He had horrible owners when he was a pup and was badly abused, he's five now and I just don't have the heart to kick him out.

hairylemon · 06/07/2012 11:18

Inbetween dp and I, with her head on MY pillow

My gsd sleeps under my bed, she lies in her bed during the day but prefers sleeping under the bed during the night.

spiderlight · 06/07/2012 11:22

On their own beds in our bedroom, although they usually come up for a cuddle on the bed first, and if either of us gets up in the night our springer will dive into the warm patch.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 06/07/2012 11:26

Jasper sleeps in the kitchen on DS2's beanbag that he stole 4 months ago.

NarkedRaspberry · 06/07/2012 11:26

One sticks to his bed. One roams in the night. No crates.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 06/07/2012 11:27

Dog bed in the garage.

Puppy is in the living room at the minute but when old enough will also go into the garage.

Cue outrage from dog lovers...

I love dogs but I also love a clean smell free house.

Flatbread · 06/07/2012 11:50

Wannabe, I so want the dogs to be in the garage too. The thing is dh travels a lot and when I first got girl dog, I wanted her in my room as I liked the company and felt safer.

But three dogs is a bit much. Dirt, noisy with lots of heavy breathing. I do miss my quiet, pristine haven. Although when dh travels, all the slobbering actually sounds comforting Grin

Ephiny · 06/07/2012 12:07

Downstairs, wherever they want. They both have beds in the living room but often seem to prefer the floor!

Never used crates, as we haven't had either of them from pups.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 06/07/2012 12:16

I don't think there's anything wrong with a dog sleeping in the garage/outside is there? I mean, plenty of working dogs live in kennels. I think it only enters in to evilness if you were leaving the dog in the garage 24/7. I couldn't leave Jasper outside at night because he'd drive us all batshit barking at shadows/cats/clouds etc.

Divster · 06/07/2012 12:19

Mine sleep under our duvet too. She starts on the floor, then gets on the bed, then does a flip on our pillows and under she goes. Luckily husband gets the feet when she flips!

Lazydaisy55 · 06/07/2012 12:30

My lab has his dog bed in my bedroom. He started off sleeping in the kitchen at night. He is a rescue dog and was 2.5 when he arrived. He hated sleeping in the kitchen, I hated the poo and wee every morning. I tried him sleeping in my bedroom and the problem disappeared.

aliasjoey · 06/07/2012 12:38

During the day - in the kitchen in his bed, or on a chair
At night - on our bed (doesn't shed, bathed twice a week, very clean -mostly!) on TOP of the covers. Not allowed underneath... but sometimes sneaks in...

wannabedomesticgoddess · 06/07/2012 12:41

I agree in the garage 24/7 is cruel..defeats the point. He has a lovely big garden to run in, comes in some evenings and gets his walks. A lot of people look at me like Im a murderer when I tell them the garage.

We went to get a puppy from an animal shelter and were refused as they didnt rehome unless the dog would live in the house as part of the family. Me and DP were completely Shock

Animal shelter versus warm garage, huge garden and loads of playtime/hugs? I know which Id choose.

SoozleQ · 06/07/2012 12:43

Our 3 year old Belgian Malinois (cross, possibly) sleeps in her crate in the kitchen. She has a very annoying habit of dirty protesting on the kitchen floor if she feels as though she's missing out on something so, even though she will have been recently let out and not desperate to go to the loo at all, if we don't crate her for sleeping, she'll wee or poo inside - not all the time but enough for us not to trust her with the run of the place over night. I wouldn't say she's happy about sleeping there - she always looks very miffed when we turf her off the sofa as we're going to bed - but she's fine with it. I wish I could trust her a bit more though.
