Long Lead to Help Work on Recall?

My dog is a breed that's not recommended to go off lead. However, she has fairly good recall and we DH want to try it out.

We're off to the UK for the summer soon and will have access to great isolated areas to practise on.

But I want to get a very long lead for reassurance as our last attempt there went wrong thanks to a deer jumping over a fence 10 feet in front of dog at the precise instant her lead was unhooked!

Please can you recommend an online store so I can order one to be waiting for us in the UK? The longest I've seen are 10 metres, is this long enough? Personally I'd prefer one about a mile long.

Otherwise DH will just unclip and that makes me terrified and DD hysterical.

Is she some kind of sighthound? I have a greyhound and I let him off once, recall was going fab till he spotted a cat, took me bloody ages to get over to the other side of the field with the buggy to fetch him.

No recommendations though, maybe try amazon and check out some reviews?

Or do what my ILs did, they have massive long length of rope tied securely onto a collar, and they just put this collar on the dog and let him have a run around attatched to the rope.

She's a Shiba inu. A hunting dog with a mind of her own. She does this look ---> Hmm very well indeed!

20 metre lead here

I used a 15m one when training our collie, it was good but they start to tangle when they are really long, and they don't last with a slightly chewy dog. On the plus side, his recall is good Grin

Ooooh I bet she's gorgeous! My dog does expressions very well too, you should see his face if you try and persuade him to go on wet grass.

PeriPathetic · 03/07/2012 14:43

Thank you Minnie! That looks good.

Yes, she is totally gorgeous and does this Grin expression lots too! But the best is when she sees other dogs in water ---> Shock She hates water.

Yes - thank you minnie! I have ordered this after yet another disastrous walk yesterday. I really have had enough of the whole running off thing and she can now stay on a long lead - forever.

Can I just ask a silly question please? Is a long line better than a retractable lead? I have a 10m retractable lead (webbing, not string type) but I just find our dog always manages to get himself tangled up round trees/small children when coming back to me!

feesh · 11/07/2012 03:22

Don't clip a long line onto a collar - put it on a harness. Lessens the chance of a dog injuring itself if it bolts. Good luck!

Quick update to say THANK YOU! She loves it and we love it too.

We're on holding the uk right now with loads of open space. She can chase a frisbee and we don't worry about losing her. Fabulous times!

We normally use a retractable and she walks very well with that and learned from a very early age how NOT to get tangled. And always use a halter anyway.
