Adopting young adult labradoodle

Looking for some advice please. We have 2 dc aged 4 and 1. I work part-time and DH works shifts. We've decided the time is right to get a dog (always wanted a family dog, we both grew up with dogs).

The issue is finding a dog that will suit my dad - my parents kindly provide childcare for my kids on the 2 days I work when DH's shifts don't allow him to be there. My dad is very allergic to cats and moulty dogs. My parents do love dogs, but this obviously restricts the possibilities of them hanging out with them.

We have been thinking about lots of breeds but there is something about labradoodles that we can't get past! Very happy to consider range of cross-breeds, have just been keeping eye out in general.

I know many labradoodles do shed and cause allergic reactions in people, but we have come across a young male (aged 2) who needs a home, has been raised with very young children, is not barky or destructive and apparently does not shed - current owner says she has asthma/excema and dog does not trigger any allergies. We are due to meet the dog in a couple of days. All our info so far is word of mouth.

If an adult dog is not shedding, can I assume it will not in the future. What questions do you ask in a private rehoming situation? I've asked about health issues, destructive tendencies, temperament, barking, size, coat. New to this though, would appreciate someone cluing me up. We are feeling very excited but obviously want to be sensible.

Make sure you get ALL paperwork for him before you leave the premises i.e. innoculation card and any medical history inc. name of regular vets in case of queries from your new vet. Also if chipped get paper evidence and number...you'll need to re register the number and owner. Don't leave with them promising to send innoculation card on when they find it. My friend got done by this once; he bought a 3 year old dog that wasn't innoculated and 'Charley' became ill with parvo virus when taken to a change of area. They nearly lost him. It would be wise to take dog immediately to your own vets for a once over.

Feeding guides, walking routines, allergies and dislikes are also helpful. If introducing to different food, mix old with new in slow ratio so as not to upset tummy.

Seek out a local training club if you want the dog to socialise easily and iron out behaviours you are concerned about. Our clud does fun agility and holds fun days and pack walks which the kids love getting involved in.

Good luck...as you'll be aware, a family isn't a family without a dog in tow Smile

I presume by "came across a young labradoodle" you mean the dog is not being rehomed by a rescue? If this is the case, tbh I would give a wide berth. People wanting to rehome dogs can say anything to get rid of the dog and whilst you might get a great dog, you might also be getting your worst nightmare.

If you go through a reputable no-kill rescue, they will have done behavioural assessment of the dog, so can best match the needs of the dog and potential owners and will have some form of after adoption support. You should look for one which will guarantee to take the dog back if you can't keep it for whatever reason, no matter how long after you adopted the dog.

If the dog is being rehomed through a reputable rescue, please feel free to ignore, but if this is via a private rehoming, personally I would reconsider.

Sorry, just spotted that this is a private rehoming. Please don't do this. If things go wrong you do not have the back-up of a rescue or any support.
