I am taking her to the vets tomorrow anyway but...

I have just visited a friend with two Jack Russells. My one year old Westie 'knows' them and they get on. This time, the younger one kept trying to mount her. I grabbed her and we kept them apart. It would look, from the dog's behaviour, as though she is in season but I can see no signs. No blood, no engorged vulva, etc.

I'll be taking her to vet tomorrow to get his opinion. She can't get pregnant from a 2 second encounter, can she?
There is absolutely no way she will or can be a mother. I was waiting until she was two (couple of months) to get her spayed.
(From my very limited experience of breeders, it seems to be quite a job to get them to mate. Whereas the Jack Russell (aged 5) seemed to know exactly what he was doing).

We've had that with visiting farm dogs trying it on with our pup. She's never had a season either. The vet checked her and just said to keep an eye out for symptoms, and take her back for a scan if we were worried.

I think it may be a terrier thing... Our old, neutered, boy gets humped by a neighbour's patterdale if he stands still too long. Poor boy...

Thanks, Daisy. It was only a matter of seconds before I grabbed her. I'll ask the vet tomorrow. I was surprised how easy he found it. He has never mated. Do you know what symtoms to watch out for? Do they do pregnancy tests on dogs? She is showing no signs of being in season, unless I am missing something, but, by the way the younger dog was behaving, it was better just to take her home. She is settled in bed now, poor dear. She seems fine, but goodness knows what she made of it. She looked mildly surprised, if a Westie can look surprised.

Aw bless her, it will have been a shock for her!

I think we were told to look for enlarging nipples and an expanding tummy. All quite crude really.

If there was any doubt and you were adamant about not having pups then the vets can offer a jab to end the pregnancy. I found this quite upsetting but when our older dog possibly got caught we discussed it and in her case it was a no brainer as she'd dislocated her hip 8 weeks previously and we knew it couldn't bear the weight of pups.

Fingers crossed for you!

It wasn't very romantic. I thought that sixth form discos were bad.

There is a mis-mate injection called Alizin which can be administered which would prevent any pregnancy from occuring. It can be given for several weeks after a possible mating. Quick as a flash slip matings have been known to result in puppies so best to err on the side of caution.

daisydotandgertie · 28/06/2012 21:00

Did he actually penetrate her?

lazyhazydaisy · 28/06/2012 21:42

I am not sure. They have a very small outside area where they went to wee and as soon as I saw him 'mounting' her I lurched for her. I actually knocked a 61 year old woman out of the way. They were kept seperate after that but he had an erection and was keen to get at her. His tongue was hanging out like Scooby Doo.

What I don't really get is how she could be in season without me knowing, ie, without her showing any typical signs. But, from the way the dog behaved...

Thanks, lbofshite. I will be erring on the side of caution. Thanks for the warning. If the deed did happen, it was certainly a 'quick as a flash' mating if it was that.

(I would have thought that if he actually did penetrate her she would have let out a (surprised) whimper.

There is no question of her breeding. She has a medical condition and would not be able to be a mother. (Apart from anything else).

She is asleep now. Poor girl.

Bitches can have what is known as a 'silent' season where there are none of the usual obvious signs.

4lbsOfShiteInA2lbBag · 28/06/2012 21:58

Of course, she may not be in season at all. Or she could have an infection (e.g. UTI) which can sometimes 'confuse' males into thinking that a bitch is in season.

Or it could just have been an over-amorous sex pest of a JRT...there's one that lives near us who constantly tries to hump my (spayed) bitch despite the fact that she's a giant breed and he can barely reach above her hocks Hmm

GrimmaTheNome · 28/06/2012 22:01

Given that dogs will happily mount cushions, legs and male dogs, given the chance, your girl would not necessarily have to have been in season for a terrier to have a go. Was your friend suprised or not by her dogs behaviour?

daisydotandgertie · 28/06/2012 22:03

Well, as it's all a bit unknown - it could have been a slip mating, or it perhaps wasn't, I'd suggest getting her spayed straight away.

There seems no reason to delay it, and I would always avoid the mismate injection if I could. There are side effects that you just don't need to bugger about with as you are planning on spaying her anyway.

It would also be worthwhile putting a white sheet or towel in her bed - it makes it much easier to spot a teeny tiny spot of blood if there is one and then at least you KNOW if she is in season or not.

When have her last seasons been? How far apart?

lazyhazydaisy · 28/06/2012 22:05

She was clipped last Friday and the groomer is an ex-veterinary nurse. I asked her to check everything; teeth, claws, vulva, bottom. The groomer thought everything was fine apart from suggesting that I clean out her ears.

I had not heard of a, 'silent season'.

I'll mention all of this to the vet tomorrow.

What does your spayed bitch do when humped? Mine just stood there, whereas I would have expected her to bolt.

My friend, the 61 year old, was surprised at his behaviour. They have not done that before.

I agree that we should just get her done.

And I will put a white towel on her bed.

With regards to getting humped, my old boy just stands there with an "oh god, not again" look on his face. For about 10 seconds. Then he growls "sod off" and walks off Grin
