Doggy Tummy Issues - Help and advice sought

We got our first dog late last year - a rescue, whose owner had died. The little fellow spent a few months with the previous owner's best friend (she is a pet sitter) before we adopted him.

The pet sitter advised us on the sort of food to feed him (only dry, and no table food). We have followed her advice.

About once a month, the dog vomits. Sometimes it is completely unexpected, and we've had no clue it was coming. Sometimes we hear his tummy rumbling, and then he has an 'episode'. He seems fine afterward.

Is this fairly normal? Any idea what could be causing it, and how to prevent it from happening? We are dog novices, and need help please.

If it is very occasional, and I would count once a month as very occasional, I wouldn't worry about it - mine both eat some grass and vomit a little bit once in a blue moon but are happy and healthy otherwise.

Well otherwise? Poos seem normal enough? No signs of pain eg being grumpy or snappy?

Yes, he seems fine otherwise. No changes in poo frequency or consistency that I have observed.

It happened the first couple of times in the car, and I thought the motion might have made him queasy. But since then, it has been at home (and usually on a rug!) instead of a hard surface floor that would be easier to clean...

So, once a month isn't unusual? I could understand more if we were feeding him a wide variety of foods that don't sit well in his tummy, but his diet is fairly bland and unexciting. Maybe a periodic funny tummy is simply a normal things with dogs?

I'm no expert, my dogs get a decent dry food but they do get various bits of human food too, mainly from the children. If it's a smallish watery vomit I wouldn't worry but if it is proper 'sick' I would mention to the vet next time you go for jabs/wormers etc or maybe just get him weighed by the nurse and mention it then?

My dog hasn't been sick in the car except when a very small puppy.
