How do I use a clicker to stop my dog jumping up at the kitchen worktops?

Just that really, he keeps jumping up when I'm trying to cook etc. His "base" is in the kitchen but I don't want to have to put him in his crate. I've only just got the clicker, and so when he jumped up I was giving him the command "off", pointing at the floor and clicking when he had all four feet ont he ground, and treating him. However, I think he's jumping up just as much now because he knows he'll get a treat for getting down again! Am I doing it wrong?

I've trained mine to just lie down when I'm cooking or we're eating. Trained with a clicker. I sat at the kitchen table and had him lie down. Clicked and treated after a second, then built it up adding a second each time. I think once I got to 20 seconds, I began clicking and treating more randomly. He easily got it and will lie down for ages now. I think the method was a Karen Pryor one. She has a great website with loads of ideas.

You need to 'load' the clicker. You get a pile of treats and then click and feed and click and feed until the dog associates the clicking with rewards. Once that's done, you click when he shows the correct behaviour and then reward. You have to do this really quickly so keep treats on hand all of the time. Praise him too so that you can gradually withdraw the food treat and the clicker and the dog sees the praise as the reward for good behaviour. Good luck Smile
