If pack/dominance theory has been discredited, why can't I find a behaviourist who doesn't subscribe to it?

We have a lovely, loyal and affectionate cocker with significant behavioural issues. She has separation anxiety and gets distressed when we leave her, but the worst aspect is her behaviour towards members of our extended family and guests.

When she sees my mum, for eg, she goes absolutely wild, howling and barking and flinging herself at her. This continues for up to an hour. She barks at guests (particularly men, particularly if they have a beard Confused). Once she saw my father on Skype and howled for TWO HOURS - she actually lay and cried to herself :(

If I take ds into the local play area, she will bark and bark and wriggle under one of the gates. The result of this is that no one wants to come round and she has to stay at home while we do activities we would like to include her in (eg the local fete and dog show in the park recently).

I've rung several behaviourists and class leaders, took her to puppy training when she was young and even had a couple of sessions with one behaviourist - but every SINGLE one has talked about dominance, or used aversives etc.

I see on the other thread that this theory has been discredited, but if so, why can't I find anyone in RL?! It's just bizarre. Is it like CC, where all MNers swear it is the devil's work but almost everyone in RL does it?

Watching this

Its big news to me that it has been discredited, but i am pleased, but find myself lost too

Any APDT trainers near you? Or the Victoria Stilwell Positively trainers?

If you're anywhere near Shropshire I have an excellent recommendation.

doggiemumma · 12/06/2012 19:16

have you taken your dog to the vets? I would just to check there is nothing amiss.

I have always been a bit Hmm about dominance theory. We have recently homed a dog from the dogs trust and the woman there was very good. I think you can ring them for advice even if you haven't taken a dog from them though.

Might sound like totally daft question, but what colour is your dog?

MiseryBusiness · 12/06/2012 19:19

ADPT trainers all use possitive training methods.

Here is some information and you can find a behaviourist who does not believe in/use dominance theory here:

Vet says we need to be stricter and that her own GSD behaves badly

She's a roan doggiemumma - she's not got the rage, if that's what you mean!

Is Victoria S the 'It's me or the dog' lady? I will definitely try there if so.

Well i am not sure i agree with your vet because your dog sounds stressed.

I did mean the rage yes, but to be fair i dont know very much about it, but yes, shes the wrong colour :)

The only thing i would say is that it is quite understandable that your dog reacts at the play park as we probably wants to get under the fence and join in the fun. My jack russel is a nightmare in that exact same situation so i don't take him.

I'm no expert, not by anymeans. Why is it that she reacts so badly to your mum? Could she be getting bad vibes from her? Dogs are pretty sensitive and lways tend to know if folk like them or not. Is your mum scared of her?

Gincognito · 12/06/2012 19:39

No, she loveloveloveloveloves her so much she has to clamber and bark herself into a frenzy. She is the same with other family members.

oh, bless her :) i misunderstood your OP and i thought you meant that she was aggressive to her. Sorry xx Not got my brain switched on tonight.
