For showing under Kennel Club rules, yes, the dog needs to be on the breed register. These would mainly be Open and Championship shows which you pay to enter. You can do companion (fun) shows with any dog of any breed or crossbreed though.

For agility and obedience competitions, you can register your dog on the KC Activity Register. This is open to any breed/crossbreed.

I think if they're KC shows the dog has to be registered with them (on the Breed or Agility register - certainly doesn't need to be a pedigree!) but there are other agility shows which wouldn't require this. ( I don't know anything about it really, was just curious and googled! Here is a bit of info on other organisations.

To do shows under Kennel Club rules, yes (except for Companion Dog Shows, run by the KC, or other independent fun pet shows).

To do agility and obedience they need only be registered on the KC Activity Register which is open to any breed/cross/mongrel.

Other independents are out there - UKA comes to mind for agility - for which they will have their own registers.

I rang breeder to ask y puppies not on register she say they kept one and decided against it!!!!!! Is that usual? I don't care love my boy wouldn't swap him for the world but just curious

Usually if pups aren't registered, it's because they are ineligible for KC registration. This can be because one or other (or both) of the parents aren't KC registered. Or because the mother was too young/too old (under a year/over 8) when the pups were born. Or because one or other (or both) of the parents are registered but their breeders put endorsements on their registrations to prevent any pups being registered without their consent. Only the original breeder of the parents can have the endorsements lifted.

Good breeders use endorsements like this to try to discourage people from breeding casually from the pups they produce and will usually only remove the endorsement if the owner can prove that all relevant health tests have been completed (with satisfactory results) and the dog is considered to have good temperament and conformation.

Lack of registration would always ring alarm bells for me.

RubberBandit · 11/06/2012 19:19

Sorry, should have explained more clearly that the endorsement on the parents pedigree states 'progeny not eligible for registration'; meaning that any pup produced by that dog cannot be KC registered unless the breeder of the parent instructs the KC to remove the endorsement.

GrimmaTheNome · 11/06/2012 19:23

The breeder may have simply decided that the pup she kept wasn't up to spec for showing or breeding, in which case why spend £15 or whatever it is on registration.

IMO there isn't ever a good reason for not registering puppies/a litter, but that won't make any difference to you doing agility/obedience under KC rules.

stoney what are the names of your puppies parents/the breeder? PM if you'd prefer. (or tell me to mind my own... Grin )
