What does your dog sleep on/in?

Currently have a plastic bed with duvets in but to be honest it stinks and Im considering swapping it for a cushion, preferably something leather so I can get rid of the dog hair as he moults terrible!

Have a very small house so it will be in the kitchen so I want something to I can clean. Its more so he can have his own space as he tends to sleep on the rug next to the bed on the bed once he thinks we are asleep and if in the lounge he lies on the settee with us.

He has a few scabby blankets in there he has had since a pup that I honestly believe would walk themselves out the door, I want to bin them and buy new but DP keeps singing that tune off the advert with the dog and his best friend bunny so now I feel bad!

Has anyone got any recommendations? He is not a dog that destroys things so I have not any concerns in that respect

You could wash the blankets!

Buy fleeces if you want to buy new, they dry in a flash and are very lightweight in the machine.

GobblersKnob · 10/06/2012 18:30

I you can afford it, I would get a Tuffie. Yes they look silly expensive, but they are a bed for life (yours not the dogs). We have had ours for over a year and it looks exactly the same as the day it was delivered.

We have a nest, which are further down the page. They are total dirt proof and van be cleaned with a pressure washer if you wish, though I just wipe ours down with a bit of flash and water now and again. As they are water proof they can get peed on or thrown up on and it all cleans up so easily, fleas can't live in the fabric. Yet they are also really soft, very supportive and very warm.

After all the hard sell, I bet you go Shock at the price, but I still maintain they are worth it. If you scroll down through customer galleries, you can see my whippet (Rudy) in his Grin

Oh he also has a sheepskin and two blankets in his and in the winter he sleeps in pyjammasGrin

He is not at all spoilt.

ornellaia · 10/06/2012 18:33

yy to washing the blankets!

My dog has one of these it's waterproof and washable and I don't think it smells. He actually usually sleeps on the floor next to it because it's the cats' favourite bed.

signet2012 · 10/06/2012 18:36

I used to wash the blankets but I got a new washing machine in with my posh new kitchen and swore I wouldnt use it to wash anything to do with the dog!

I could hand wash them though and hang on the line to dry! feels stupid for not thinking that through!

Will check out that bed, Although Im not flush I dont mind spending a bit on him being comfortable and to easy my guilt for moving his bed out of what will soon be the babies room

In the kitchen my boxers have a wicker day bed which has a quilt/pillow in it that I made them, I made three covers for it and I change the cover every few days then boil wash the inner once a month.

In the lounge we have a huge picture window and the dogs have a three person bean bag in front of it, the bean bag has a washable suede cover which I then cover with a throw (from Ikea, they're only a few pounds), the throws get washed and changed weekly and the bean bag cover about twice a year.

I also bath my dogs once a month, I would be devastated if some one said my house smelt of dogs Blush ( both our kids live away from home and believe me they would say if the house smelt!!).

signet2012 · 10/06/2012 19:23

Thats what I am worried about. The plastic bed with the duvet is currently in DP office but this will soon become the babies nursery so I want to move him before the baby comes to prevent any jealousy.

When I walked in the office the other day it stunk of dog and I was mortified! DP cant smell it but I can.

I often buy nice throws from charity shops/car boots. I put them on top of his vinyl covered big dog cushion.

I wash them regularly. But, if they start to get a bit shabby looking, I have no qualms about throwing them, cos they were cheap.

The cushion lives in the living room, so throws etc coordinate with the decor :-)

Scuttlebutter · 10/06/2012 23:22

We have an assortment of Ikea duvets and duvet covers around the place. Very cheap; both duvets and covers are easily washable and should be done regularly so that you help break flea egg cycles and to avoid stinkiness. Grin However, both sofas and beds are also regularly used by hounds. Fleece throws are also v handy and we have some nice home made quilts that seem to get commandeered too Blush

I gotta say - I am the queen of slack housekeeping but I can't imagine not laundering the dog's bedding Confused

I have a whippet so extreme comfort is required Wink.

Standard plastic kidney shaped dogs bed - if dog is ever sick this can easily be disinfected. Learnt that lesson from my previous dog who came to me in a terrible state.

I made a couple of fleece covers cut to the kidney shape of the bed - the fabric I chose can be washed at 60. Filled with ordinary anti-bed mite pillows for the obligitory comfort whippets need, so that dog stays off my sofas! Both pillows and fleece covers can be washed without fuss. Having 2 fleece covered pillows is again a precaution in case dog is ever ill, and means I can line dry the dog bedding.

Then I have a couple of charity shop baby quilts & an old single duvet that's seen better days. These are added to the dog's bed as needed depending on the time of year. Again they are easily washed at 60 & line dried. In high summer I throw an old charity shop sheet over the fleece pillow cover so it doesn't feel to sweaty for the dog.

If the dog's bedding seems a bit whiffy then I add a tablespoon of napisan to the washing machine to sanitise it.

MiseryBusiness · 11/06/2012 08:32

I wish we had options as to what bed one of ours could have. She chews just about anything so we buy 2nd hand blankets as cheap as possible as she just ruins them and then I chuck them out.

I remove the cover from our other ddogs bed and wash the cover then put the washing machine on a couple of maintenance washes to get rid of the hair.

throckenholt · 11/06/2012 08:38

Ours has a platic bed with an old duvet and a fleece blanket. He often pulls them all out ! And he migrates around the house overnight - sometimes sleeps on the stairs or on the landing.

When they get smelly I stick them in the washing machine. We have a couple of spare bits of duvet so I can swap the smelly one and not worry about it being dry by bedtime if I wash one.

feesh · 11/06/2012 08:43

My dog has the bloody IKEA Hemnes day bed all to herself. Spoilt little madam. It's in her own bedroom. We never planned it that way, bloody dog just kind of sneaked in and took over our lives and now the daybed is too skanky for any self respecting human to go anywhere near it

signet2012 · 11/06/2012 09:02

I did used to wash it honest !!!! Just not since I got my new washer in a vain hope to keep this one nice!!! His bed is something that's been for show really as he never really bothered with it. I was going to get rid and then sods law it's his new favourite thing. I might just stay with the plastic bed and buy cheap fleeces I can hand wash those and put them on the line

Ikea do nice cheap cotton and fleece throws in various colours.

I buy on the principle of 3, one on the bed, one in the wash and one in the cupboard for emergencies.

My dogs are not allowed to sleep on the sofas or beds, its about the only two things they are not allowed to do.

MoaningMajestyReignsAgain · 11/06/2012 09:43

My dogs have a large plastic bed with soft padded bed things inside it. In theory.

In reality, the little old dog sleeps in our bed with us and the bigger new dog sleeps on the settee once everyone has gone to bed I just pretend I don't know

Bossybritches22 · 11/06/2012 11:33

Old duvet, 2 cheap cotton covers . Wash them on 60 regularly & air the duvet in the garden & give a good shake. Spray with anti-flea stuff before stuffing back in duvet.

All supermarkets do cheap duvets, or there are often folk throwing them out so endless supply of bedding & throw when they get manky.

Inthepotty · 11/06/2012 17:18

Mine sleeps in his crate usually, it's got a tuffies bed inside, with an old fleece in (for snuggling/hiding bones!) or on the rug in living room. Tuffies wipes clean, fleece goes in wash at 60. Hoover the fleece first so not as much hair in washer. Thankfully rug is dark brown and black, and so is the dog so it hides the hair well.... Smile If he's wet I wrap him in a towel then send him to bed, otherwise he honks and smell lingers on rug. Hes started to climb on dining room chairs and lays flat along all 4 of them, hidden under the lip of table?! Nearly had a heart attack the other day when I couldn't see him. I just wipe them with wipes to get rid of hair/dog smell.

Low shedding labradoodle my arse

Inthepotty · 11/06/2012 17:19

Oh, and tesco value sleeping bag in boot of car, fab as its waterproof, snugly and washes and dries fast.

blondiep14 · 11/06/2012 17:28

Our Boxer rips cushion type beds and won't set paw in a hard plastic bed no matter what I put in it!
He sleeps on a fleece blanket and old bath mat for a bit of padding!
He doesn't rip fleece and I wash them once a week, I also tumble them to get the excess fur out. Afterwards I run a rinse cycle on the washing machine.
