Getting new puppy in one weeks time

Puppypanic · 08/06/2012 23:51

Suddenly scared witless!

Is this normal like that feeling you get before you give birth or get married?

Is it good to suddenly be getting terrified, does it mean I'm not undertaking this lightly? It's such a massive commitment and undertaking. I've had a dog before but many moons ago.

I've thought about nothing else since the end of last year, researched, visited breeders, getting pup from very reputable, responsible breeder.

I over think everything and definitely suffer from analysis paralysis.

Please help calm me down. I know it's what we all want as a family just scary, sure it will all be fine when I can just get stuck in with the care and training etc.

Did anyone else feel the same and was it all ok?

I just googled this. That sounds about right for me. when I really think about it I feel very excited and I know it is right for us Smile

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 11/06/2012 13:07

what day are you gettig your puppy ?

BetterChoicesChair · 11/06/2012 16:52

I think it's normal, and healthy, to have the puppy jitters...it means you've been reading and researching and have probably too much information (ie; all the horror stories and tales of 'things that can go wrong'). Very much like preparing for a new baby Smile. We've just got our second dog and I had this anxiety too, even though we had a great experience with our first dog! And then in the first few weeks there's a bit of a panic when your routine goes completely out the window and you're not sleeping and snapping at your DH in a fugue of exhaustion and you're going through kitchen-roll like there's no tomorrow Grin. We're a month in now and things have definitely settled into a (new) routine and it's so, so rewarding to watch your puppy learning new things and bonding with your family and watching all the funny things they do. We're at the stage now where the enjoyment is overtaking the initial very hard work of the first few weeks. Keep visiting the doghouse as there are lots of posts from people who are going through all the same things, or have been there. And relax and enjoy your new family member Smile. Good Luck!

Hi, I was like this before we got our rescue, I also thought that maybe I was so anxious because it was the wrong thing to do, and it would be too disruptive and I might go a bit mad. I also over analyse and we are now only about 7 weeks in. A few issues, the main one is his reaction to other dogs, he goes a bit mad, but I hope to be able to fix this. The others are just normal things like pushing the boundaries a little, but this is all perseverance with routine and rules. I was also a bit iffy about telling people, so I just said to my friends on a night out "I will have a dog next time you see me" which we did. I didn't want to hear all the negative things like, up early, tied to the house, picking up poo, walking in the rain etc., none of these things have actually killed anyone as far as I know. Ok it would have been nice to have a lie in over half term as dds are now older, but it didn't kill me!

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 13/06/2012 16:52

not long now op!

Puppypanic · 13/06/2012 22:57

Yes he comes next week on Wed!!! Am still terrified and excited, just want him here now so that I can deal with it and any problems that come up rather than just anticipating them which is often worse.

Thank you dog house posters for encouraging me and doubtless I will be on here a lot wailing and gnashing teeth over the next few weeks!

Analysis paralysis is such a great description. It's almost been too long since we made the decision but have wanted to do it the right way so will hopefully be worth the wait and the anxiety.

OP posts:
Gorran · 13/06/2012 23:48

I'm feeling exactly the same! And am a major sufferer of Analysis Paralysis!

Our pup hopefully arrives tomorrow, and I'm not sure if you've seen my doom and gloom thread, but from what I've heard from other people today, nobody would ever have a puppy ever - much less a labrador puppy!

Like you, I'd rather the pup was here now, so I could actually deal with whatever problems there may be, as opposed to sitting worrying about them - hopefully unneccessarily!

Puppypanic · 14/06/2012 08:37

Oooh do link to your thread Gorran!

I must say it is reassuring to know that others feel the same. I feel sick with worry at the moment which is insane at what should be such a lovely time.

Do try and keep us updated on your new arrival if you have time, sounds lovely and I have loads of friends with labs who seem quite sane and happy (owners and dogs!).

What time is he/she arriving?

puppypanic and gorran - you could be me. Please keep us informed as to your progress as I (hopefully) will be getting our pup i September -October time! I range from really excited and cannot wait to relieved that it is iso far in the future! Confused

BetterChoicesChair · 14/06/2012 12:07

Good Luck today, Gorran! Smile.

aliasjoey · 14/06/2012 12:22

its probably good that you are thinking and planning it. I did the opposite - just went out and bought a puppy from a Back Yard Breeder. Okay, I exaggerate, they weren't but they could have been and I was clueless.

I'd never had a dog before, much less a puppy and the vet I took him to the next day was shocked at my ignorance Shock I couldn't answer any sensible questions like 'how many puppies were in the litter' 'did they give you a feeding schedule' etc.

We were lucky; although slightly neurotic he has turned out fine. He's obviously not quite as advertised, although he doesn't shed which is the main reason we went for the breed. But he's a bit big, and has bald patches on the back of his legs - which a groomer told me was unusual in poodles - but common in Westies! - and also he has a terrier personality instead of a retriever personality.

After reading some horrer stories I think we were lucky, we could have turned up to some awful breeder (and knowing me I'd have felt sorry for the puppy & bought it anyway AND then had nightmares about the ones we'd left behind) You are definitely a good owner for putting more preparation into it than we did Blush

Gorran · 14/06/2012 14:51

I've bumped the thread up now, can't do links on iPhone, well, not so I've figured out anyway!

We go and collect her this eve, about 5.30 pm. Will try and update later!

Shoutymomma · 16/06/2012 20:29

Ours arrives next Fri and I am in full fret mode! First time for us woth a pup (we've prev had rescues). My biggest concern is my boy dog feeling neglected as the girls go puppy bonkers. Hey ho, only one way to find it all out..... :)

NuggetsForTeaAgain · 16/06/2012 20:52

I wish ours was coming next week! I have ages to wait! What breed of dog shouty? And what made you go for a pup this time around?

Puppypanic · 18/06/2012 18:33

Well he's here!

I feel emotionally drained with the excitement and worry but he is here and so so sweet. Travelled so well in the car and his tail hasn't stopped wagging since he arrived home. He is having a little sleep now after playing with the children and having two small visitors. I've shooed everyone away to give him lots of peace and quiet to sleep bless him.

Am so worried that my eldest son will be allergic to him as he's been struggling with hay fever for the last couple of weeks. Tell me people can get hay fever and not necessarily be prone to animal allergies?! They (and me) would be absolutely distraught if that was the case. Fingers and toes all madly crossed.

Can is ask what I do tonight re going to the loo? I never go to bed until midnight but do I set my alarm and come down in the night to let him out? I don't want him to think that I will come to him every time he whimpers but at the same time realise that he will be confused tonight as away from his siblings and mother for the first time.

Gorran how are to getting on?

Nuggets how are your nerves!

OP posts:
NuggetsForTeaAgain · 18/06/2012 22:18
