Should I be worried?

I am looking after my dads jrt for 3 weeks and today he has been eating grass on and off all day, is a bit more quiet than usual and had some diarrhoea earlier.

I don't know anything other than the basics about dogs so any advice appreciated!!!

TIA

Both of my dogs eat grass; I think it is quite usual. Sometimes it makes them throw up but I don't think this is anything to worry about as such.
However if he's out of sorts and has diarrohea keep an eye on him. It could just be the change of routine, but you can always phone the vet for advice.

My dog loves grass. Particularly pleased with this time of year as the grass is nice and long. Doesn't seem to eat more or less in relation to any diarrhoea or other tummy problems, just availability of grass!

He does have upset tummy if his diet changes (eg he snaffled a load of scraps left in park the other day when dh took him for a run) but it soon settles down again - if not within 24 hours I'd think about taking him to vet, might actually do something after 48 hours.

And for diarrhoea, I mean softer poo than is normal for him, not like humans get (if you see what I mean...for proper horrid diarrhoea I'd act way more quickly)

Hello thanks for replies, I am wondering whether its a change in routine/ diet thats upset is tummy a bit, I have a cat and it was impossible to keep their food seperate so I admitted defeat and they both now eat whatever is down!!

He is still eating grass on walks but not as much but tonight I am wishing I had a gas mask as he has terrible wind Grin

It is such a responsible looking after someone elses dog!!! He was sick a bit this morning but otherwise seems fine so I am keeping an eye on him. Thanks again.

Adding some plain boiled rice to his food should settle his tum if he's still feeling off.

BreadAndJamForFrances · 09/06/2012 19:41

My JRT eats grass....he nibbles off the tips of softer grass when he has a tummy ache from eating too much/different food/change of routine and he will eat longer grass to make himself sick sometimes......the grass always sorts him out and he perks up after eating his 'grass salad' as the DC call it!!

Many dogs eat grass this time of year - it is lush, green and juicy.

It is thought that when dogs want to make themselves sick they eat the grass quickly and without chewing and the tickling feeling in the dogs throat makes them sick. So not all grass eating is a digestion issue.

If your dog does eat grass do treat for lungworm (advocate) and worm regularly.

Otherwise it is nothing to worry about.

orienteerer · 09/06/2012 20:01

Perfectly normal.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 09/06/2012 21:25

It's OK. Except for when it's my special, lovely ornamental grass that is apparently really really tasty. Angry

Oh, and it's also not OK if it works its way out the other end and has to be pulled out of lovely dog's bottom for him!

UterusUterusGhali · 10/06/2012 01:05

My dog would eat grass if she wanted to be sick. Often she wouldn't eat her breakfast until she had done this.

All normal, I think. She was v healthy.

Don't stop your dog doing it-it's probably for a reason. Combined with the other symptoms though I might be inclined to 'phone the vet.

YNK · 10/06/2012 01:15

They love grass but its horrid to have to pull the poo outta their bum when it's impacted with grass !
Yuck yuck!
However if you want to firm up their poo - get some bones from the local butcher. he might even do some dog mince to feed raw. it will make the poo much easier to pick up!!!

Scuttlebutter · 10/06/2012 14:36

We've got some grass munchers here too. When we go to the special greyhound field for off lead zoomies, the first thing they all do is have a nice munch - looks hilarious, like a herd of grazing sheep. Grin Doesn't seem to be linked to poorly tums, just something they enjoy.

TheCunnyFunt · 11/06/2012 20:27

Oooh sprocket likes grass too! I always wanted a horse and a dog when I was younger, now I have both in 1 animal! He's a greyhound so as big as a small pony :o
