Family dog recommendations?

Can anyone help? We are looking to get a dog in the new year (once I'm finished work and will be at home to devote enough time to a new puppy)

I'm not a fan of little dogs (although do have soft spots for cocker spaniels and king charles cavaliers) and would prefer a big soft lump of a dog....any recommendations for a breed that would cope well in a family environment (baby, 2 cats and a husband). I know the obvious choice is a Lab, but thinking away from that, what would be top of your list?

Thanks

Thanks ladies. Think we have whittled down the list to a Weimaraner or GSP so will be doing more research in to them.

Those are both great dogs and both come in smooth, wirehair and longhair versions, so you've got lots of flavours to choose from!

Jajas - Sorry for not replying to your question earlier.

IMO feeding raw is the best option because you know what food they are getting.

Red meat isn't great. Liver and such is a no no. Some veg is high in purines, you have to do your research and no Dalmatian if free from this problem but by feeding the right diet you can minimize the risk iyswim?

We've got a 9 month old german shorthaired pointer. We too considered Labs and Viszlas but went for a GSP. Best decision ever, he's fab! Harder to train than a lab, I think they stay in puppy mode til about 18 months or so, but he's so friendly and loves kids. Bags of energy though!!
