Hi I'm desperately trying to find a loving home for my jack Russell dog , he is approximately 9 months old he has been neutered and is up to date on his jabs as far as I'm aware , the reason I'm trying to re home him is I'm ever hardly at home and just don't have the time to train him , I rehomed him myself as he was in a flat with no balcony I have had him for about 5-6 months he is still not toilet trained I have a toddler who is in to everything and it's not healthy for him to be playing in dogs mess all the time . He is a very active and loving natured dog gets on well with my children and my other dog , he does like to chase cats ! Would suit some one who would be home most of the day to give him the time and attention he needs he is also slightly travel sick.

Please don't use the internet to rehome. Get in touch with a no kill rescue and give a generous donation to them.

Poor bugger. 2 homes that don't want him in 9 months :(

MiseryBusiness · 02/06/2012 11:03

As hairylemon says, Please do not use the internet to rehome your dog.

Phone round all of your local 'No Kill' rescures and rehome through them.

Poor little bugger is only 9 months and already rehomed twice. A rescue will try their absolute best to make sure he goes to a suitable life long home. If it doesn't work they will always take to dog back.

TeaTeaLotsOfJubileeTea · 02/06/2012 11:07

What on earth possessed you in the first place???

Yes please don't use the internet. Jack russells are often used as bait dogs and for badger baiting.

Please contact the local rescue. They will help you

colditz · 02/06/2012 11:14

Please don't use the Internet, please. Jack Russell's get used to train fighting dogs because they are small but they never give up. They always die, they are always ripped to pieces. Please contact www.jack-russell-terrier.co.uk/rescue-dogs/index.php. Do not give him away to an individual.

And for fucks sake, do not get another dog.

OracleInAMonarchale · 02/06/2012 11:19

oh fgs, agree with everyone else. I have a JR and this has made me hug him.

D0oinMeCleanin · 02/06/2012 11:24

At the risk of being accused of being a bitch again.... Why can you not just train him?

It's his best chance. Rescues are full of JRT and their ilk. Rehoming on the internet is risky at best. A painful and prolonged death sentence at worse. What the others have said is true. It happens often.

Toilet training is easy. You just need to do it right. There are plenty of people here willing to help talk you through it. It shouldn't take longer than a week provided you are willing to put in the work.

hairylemon · 02/06/2012 11:47

Infact OP Ive just seen you have another dog. So it cant be much of a problem you not being home alot of the time? Training a dog does take some effort but once its done its done.

Id maybe look into those puppy pad things for now, keep them in another room and train the dog to go on those so at least its easy to clean the mess away from the toddler. Every time he craps, put him on the pad and repeat. Once he gets the hang of it gradually move the pads to the back door and then outside and the dog will quickly pick up that outside is where he does his mess. And at the end of the day a JRTs shit cant be that big so cleaning it up for a short period of time wont be too much effort, they are just giant rats really Grin

If your other kids are a bit older (Im guessing they must be at least 4+?) and can be given 'tasks' ie. put a pad out please, can you take the dog to the back garden please etc etc - get them involved, will give them a great sense of responsibility and take a bit of the pressure off you a bit.

Training a dog can seem daunting, but its really very little effort in the scheme of things.

Come on woman!!, youve given birth, have a toddler and other children AND another dog, you can do this, if you actually do want to keep the dog. If not and (and I dont quite mean this to be as nasty as it will come across) you are just using the above as an excuse then at least be honest with yourself and do the responsible thing by him and ring a no kill rescue, and FGS dont advertise him on the internet, he'll be a snack for a pitbull within a week Sad

hairylemon · 02/06/2012 11:51

D0oin, you are anything but a bitch. Ive only ever seen you give good solid advice on here.

Agree totally about toilet training, it took us 3 days with our SBT. OP if you are not working this bank hol now is the perfect time to give it a go. I only suggested the pads as a solution to the toddler thing but the other way is to just put him outside every time he shits. It honestly doesnt take long at all to get him trained up.

RedwingWinter · 02/06/2012 18:30

I agree with Dooin. He sounds like a lovely dog and it wouldn't take very long to toilet-train him.

Please don't re-home through the internet for all the reasons people have said above. If you must re-home him, find a no-kill rescue and do it that way, so that you know he will have a home for life.

I have tried loads of places which are full up , it's not that he isn't wanted if u had read it properly for the ones that say he is not wanted you would have seen that I have a very small child who likes to touch everything and i don't want him playing with dog poo as you know it carries all sorts of germs ! And yes I have another dog which I got a few years ago when I wasn't working so I had the time and energy to train her which didn't take long at all if I had known I was going to work the hours I do I wouldn't have got the dog . So for the 4 1/2 months I have had him I have done everything I can think of , i have since started work which is why im hardly at home .I live in a bungalow so I don't have any other room to keep the dog in and I can't separate the 2 as he will howl the place down I have to shut them in the kitchen when I go out the house as I have a dog gate which he jumps over and then chews up the baby's toys I have tried the training pads as was told he was trained to use them which he obviously wasn't as all he done is chew them up I have even had a relative coming round twice a day to let them out to try and help , he is great when the door is constantly open but the moment it's shut he will just poo and wee wherever he feels like and will cock his leg up the wall . Getting him rehomed is the last thing I want to do so whoever it was who said it shouldn't take more than a week I'd like to hear your ideas like I said above putting pads or newspaper down is a definite no as it is in bits in seconds .

if you don't want to rehome him Taryn28 - I think you can do this. You have done it with your other dog so I bet you can housetrain dog 2 It sounds like you have lots of help at hand too. Imagine how great you will feel if you can get this cracked in a month or so. Start from scratch.

RedwingWinter · 03/06/2012 00:49

You will have to go back to basics with him. I would forget about the pads - they still train him to go indoors. Keep taking him outside and praise him like crazy when he goes to the toilet. You can also attach a command to it like 'pee' or 'go toilet'; say it when he does the deed and then lots of praise and fuss. If he goes in the house, don't punish him because he will just learn to do it in secret; clean up and try and take him out sooner next time.

It will really help if you are around a lot to supervise him - maybe the relative who lets him out can come round more often for a little while, just until you get it cracked? Take him outside when he wakes up from a nap, after he's eaten, and every half hour or hour to make sure that he always has the chance to go outside. If you do this it won't take him long to get the hang of it.

You will have to clean the house to get rid of the smell because if he can smell where he's been before, it will confuse him. You can get cleaners from the pet shop for this - normal household cleaners won't do the trick, you need something that will get rid of the smell of dog pee.

It will feel like hard work in the beginning because you'll have to keep taking him outside - but very soon you'll have cracked it.

D0oinMeCleanin · 03/06/2012 03:20

What Redwing said. Pads are a waste of time. I've never used them.

If you see him sniffing around and/or circling, grab him straight away and take him out. When he pees treat him or click and then treat if he is used to a clicker.

Also take out after eating, napping and his mad half hour and routinely throughout the day, as said above.

It would be loads quicker if he could be supervised whilst training. Would the relative sit in with him while you work?

My Whippet pup trained in about 3 days. My JRT/Fox Terrier X was a bit longer to catch on, but he was older and after noticing he was looking for paper and bits of rubbish to go on I presumed he had been 'paper trained' to go inside the house. It still only took about ten to twelve days for him to totally get it.

Use the most high value treat you have to hand. For us it's raw mince or mature chedder but whatever your dog loves will work.
