I'm hoping one of you could help.
My friends mum passed away nearly three years ago after an awful illness. Her two little dogs (jack Russell/terrier cross) went to live with family friends. The older of the two dogs is now incontinent and the family caring for them have two young children and now want my friend to take one or both dogs back. My friend is in an awful situation both her and her brother are not in a position to take either dog. I myself live in a flat and we cannot think of anyone else who could take them?
Where to go from here? The dogs were my friends mums pride and joy and the thought of them going to a large battersea dogs home type place is really sad.
Does anyone one know of any smaller homely type places that would take them?

Any advice would be really gratefully received.

that's awful!

they wanted a dog, but now it's ill they just want to hand it back??

whereabouts are you/they?

Dogs trust are good, google for your nearest. Otherwise google for rescues in your area, but make sure they are RESCUE not Pound. And google NO KILL rescues. Even if the Rescue is full they may take a dog and put it in an foster home.

hello, Rae. After a period of three years, they are now the responsibility of the family concerned Sad - this sort of scenario is why it is always a good idea to organise an adoption through a rescue/charity who can provide lifelong back up if this sort of thing happens.

Your friend has a number of options. Presumably these dogs are now quite elderly? She could try the Cinnamon Trust, or the Oldies Club who as name suggests specialise in older dogs. She could also try a local all breed rescue - whereabouts roughly in the UK is she ? We could make some suggestions.

The main thing is to avoid the RSPCA, your dog pound/dogs home (they will only have seven days, if that before being PTS) and under no circs should she advertise them on Facebook, Gumtree etc as they could end up in all sorts of horrible situations.

Also, realise you may have tried this, have the dogs been properly assessed by a vet? Is the incontinence something which is going to be lifelong or is it just a temporary problem? Many continence problems can be helped/minimised with vets help and medication.

Also, any charity that does take the dogs will want to know:- full health history, list of vaccinations, description of character, whether the dogs should be a pair or can be separated, whether already chipped or neutered. It's useful to know this so your friends can gather together all the relevant paperwork, including anything to show the original transfer of ownership.

Hope this helps. Sad

Thanks for your quick replies.
They live in Surrey - but I think my friend would drive them a good distance if there was a place that meant they would be safe and well loved. I think that's the thing her mum loved them so much - she feels so guilty that she can't take them Sad

My friend said she thought they were in a permanent home but the family friend has said it was always only a temporary measure....
I will have a google now - thank you for your kind advice.

ok she could try epsom canine rescue, or allsorts dog rescue

allsorts is brighton, but if she's willing to travel that may work out ok?

both are no-kill rescues

Hope dog is now sorted. Happy Endings in Faversham is a brilliant, small, lovely rescue.
