Dog and newly planted garden

How do you stop a dog running across a newly planted flowerbed full of delicate new lovelies? He is a 7 month neutered springer, and just visits for a few days a week. He is into everything and I've had to lock him in kitchen when I'm trying to plant things, as he's thinks it is some sort of retrieval game and digs them up and brings them back to me. [Very frustrating] However, everything now is planted, and I don't want to get cross with him for rampaging...

Is a simple "no" going to work? Owners only have paved garden with no plants atm, so I suppose he is just not used to flowerbeds. Plastic fence, acclimatization, close supervision, leave him in garden to potter, accept destruction, what is my best strategy?

He just comes here from 9-3 and we go on a long walk in the middle of the day, but owners usually leave him in their garden, which is small and paved with a kennel when THEY leave him at home, which is occasionally what I do when I need to go out when he is here...leave him in garden I mean...but now that garden is newly planted I feel reluctant to chance it and leave him there on a destroy mission for 2 hours..

But it seems mean not to have him just for that reason. He loves coming here and we really enjoy going on walks together. Don't want this to be a reason not to have him.

take him for his walk and then make him stay indoors

Agree with crossed, don't leave him unsupervised. I trained mine by telling him 'off' when he went on the flower bed, and calling him over for praise. Admittedly mine is a bit jumpy, so a certain tone of voice and he will stop whatever he is doing instantly. If your springer is a bit more happy go lucky he might just give you a doggie two fingers and carry on.

I'm sure a proper trainer will be on soon to give to sensible advice.
