a bit of a dodgy doggy tum

Puppy is around 9/10 weeks. She had her first jabs on Tuesday. It's hot. We're gradually changing her food (as running out of the stuff she came with- Arden Grange, and can't find it in the shop) over the past day or so.

She's been a bit squitty and pukey today, and was the day before yesterday, too.

She's also due worming. Could it be down to worms?

Should I be bothered? She seems pretty fine, apart from not eating much/running around much in the middle of the day when it's hotter...

No. Unlikely to be worms.

It could be the food change - Arden Grange can be ordered online very easily.

If she were mine and such a baby, I would ring the vet to run it past them. 2 days is a long time for a tiny pup to have an upset tum, especially in this heat. I wouldn't be happy to leave it. What breed is she? Approx how heavy?

Is she drinking? Is she interested in her food? I realise you prob both sleeping currently but you know what I mean! If she is still off colour in the morning I'd give your vets a call.
Iv seen a couple of pups brought in today very weak because upset puppy tums (common for lots of reasons at that age - general stress of new homes/vaccs, food changes, worm burdens etc) and hot weather = dehydrated, lethargic pups.
Hope she is feeling better, try and keep her quiet in this hot weather they do tend to over do it when they are little!!

Thanks both of you.

She's a vaguely border terrierish Dog Surprise, so not a big dog, but not a tiny tiny one either.

She's drinking, and eating all her meals apart from lunch which she's leaving until it cools down later in the afternoon.

No accidents overnight. She pooed in the garden when I took her out this morning, and it was perfectly normal.

We'll keep a close eye on her, though.

Re: worming. The lady we got her from said she was due her second worming about now. When we took her to the vets, he said he'd worm her at her next jabs.

Who's right?

Should we buy worming stuff and just do her anyway? (Not altogether sure the vet completely understood that because she was a rescue puppy she was behind on all these things.)

Did the lady you got her from tell you what she'd used for worming and exactly when it was done?

And when are the next set of jabs due?

I'm sure you already know this, but get a decent wormer - not bob martin's or anything from a supermarket. Drontal or Panacur are well known decent ones

toomuchtoyoung · 26/05/2012 08:47

Hi we reccomend 8 weeks, 10 weeks, 12 weeks (2 weekly until they are 12 weeks old)
Then monthly until they 6 months.
After that the average dog needs worming every 3 months. Some may need it more frequently.
Unlike a flea product which has a preventative action wormers will only get rid of the worms present at the time. It's very safe to worm her now. Just make sure as previously said you use a reputable wormer (drontal, milbemax etc) and you weigh her so she gets right dose for her weight.
Enjoy her Iv got a ?border x rescue pup and he's delightful :-D

She was wormed with panacur last time. The lady suggested ringing the changes though, as she reckoned that different ones were more effective on different worms?

Apparently she was very wormy at her first dose.

Next set of jabs are due in a fortnight.

Most pups are born with roundworm, so important to keep doing them frequently.

Panacur is brilliant for young pups and pregnant bitches as it's licensed for use from a very young age and very safe. However it doesnt do all types of tapeworm so as your pup gets older it's a good idea to treat with one that does.
