I think our dog howls when we go out. Not sure what to do!

We have a greyhound, had him since the end of January, he is very settled here now and the perfect pet.

DP is building us a kitchen extension at the moment and if he is working outside and I go out DP says the dog howls, he obviously doesn't realise that DP is home.

The thing is, I'm not sure if I should do anything about it. We live in a semi, our next door neighbour who is not attatched to us hasn't complained to us about the howling, and I know she would be straight round to tell us if she heard him. So presumably she doesn't hear a peep. The neighbour who is joined onto us would definitely be able to hear him, the dog sounds exactly like a cow mooing when he howls. BUT this neighbour happens to be very deaf. He hasn't complained either.

I honestly don't know what I actually could do about the howling. The dog just goes to his bed as I'm going out and seems very calm and chilled about it, not bothered at all. So I'm not sure that doing that thing where you go out then straight back in over and over will have any effect.

What do I do??

How long does the howling go on for? Does he know DH is outside and want to get to him? I wouldn't worry about your neighbours as it sounds like they don't hear anything but I wouldn't like to think of your dog being unhappy. Have you tried leaving a radio on, leaving him with a stuffed Kong etc? Sorry not really being much help!

I usually leave him a frozen bone, he hasn't got a kong but he's probably too lazy to even attempt to work one out :o

I'm not sure how long it goes on for, DP hasn't said. I'll ask him when he's not upto his neck in bricks and cement.

Did you do alone-training with him before you started going out and leaving him at home? If not, you need to google 'separation anxiety' and go back to basics with the training.

You absolutely do need to address this, regardless of whether or not the neighbours can hear him, because if he's howling he's probably distressed and that's not fair.

Wouldn't a distressed dog be more likely to be getting anxious as we were heading out though? Like I said before, he doesn't seem bothered when we leave at all! And DP says that when I'm out and he howls and DP is outside he can see him through the window, lying his bed

Confused
