I was putting the baby to bed. Unbeknownst to me, the puppy had reached onto our kitchen counter and removed the brioches from my handbag. He is now at the vet, vomiting is being induced. poor puppy. Poor me.

would they really do him that much harm that he needs to have vomiting induced? Hmm

Poor puppy Sad. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs isn't it? At least more than a tiny amount is.

shoutymcshoutsmum · 21/05/2012 16:09

According to vet, just a teaspoon of confectionary chocolate could be enough. The more cocoa solids i.e. the darker the chocolate, the greater the risk. I too am sceptical that it would really have caused such trouble, but i am not going to take the risk!

I imagine a little puppy needs much much less than a big dog to overwhelm their system. Hope he's ok soon.

RedwingWinter · 21/05/2012 16:32

Poor puppy. You did the right thing taking him straight to the vet. How is he doing now?

betty10k · 21/05/2012 16:40

Sorry to hear this but am sure he'll be fine - our Jack Russell ate my Easter Egg this year - the whole thing. Husband had left it in a bag in the car for a week and at some stage he'd broken open the bag, ripped the cardboard front and eaten the entire chocolate egg leaving the gold foil inside - very careful job! But he was fine!

tootymaloo · 21/05/2012 16:41

Wow, poor pup. Our vets told us a dog would have to eat a rather large amount of real chocolate, not Cadburys to be very sick! I'm not quite sure what he was saying about delicious Cadburys chocHmm

I went into panic when the bugger (dog not vet) munched through a box of 12 profiteroles covered in choc. I think M must have iron guts as other than looser poop for a day it didnt seem to affect him.

I wont even tell you the story of Ds and his Easter egg sharing with his best buddy!

Vet packed us off with a few tips on where never to leave foodGrin

Hope pup gets better soon.

Actually the dose of dark chocolate is very small to be toxic. Us vets have an app for our i-phones that instantly calculates if it is a toxic dose.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 21/05/2012 17:26

I doubt your dog would be too ill with 5 brioche. But better safe than sorry.

A friend of mine sent me an SOS at Easter as her flatcoat raided her daughters easter egg stash. He didnt even have the decency to be very ill, but did have sparkly foil poos for a couple of days.

Stoney666 · 21/05/2012 17:32

My friends kids left tin of hardly touched quality street on their bed one Xmas. The lid was off. Gorgeous chunky lab ate the lot I clouding wrappers!!!!!! Was fine lol

QuickLookBusy · 21/05/2012 17:36

Glad pup is ok.

My little Jack Russell ate 2 ear plugs at the weekend. I didn't even know she had eaten them until I noticed them in her poo.

It really worried me, I'm sure if a child ate them they would choke. But she wasn't off her food or ill in any way. Earplugs are now safely kept in a draw so she can't get them.

The issue is that only some dogs are sensitive to chocolate, however, the problem is we only know it's a problem once they have an anaphylactic reaction and most of these dogs die. We have no way of identifying these dogs till it happens.

Pascha · 21/05/2012 17:45

Glad your little doggy is fine.

Catsmamma · 21/05/2012 17:52

glad puppy is fine!

our vet said it's very difficult to judge a toxic dose, it varies from breed to breed and dog to dog

Keller (large gsd) managed to get at a whole tub of cocoa, I did not realise the children had left it up on the side in the utility where he slept and dh had not spotted it when dog went to bed

We were woken at about 3 am by Keller marauding around the house, to be fair a good deal of cocoa was on the floors all through, but he was completely hyper and panting, we called the vet at 7 am and took him in

he was fine without any meds ..would not keep a drip in! and home in time for tea!

RedwingWinter · 21/05/2012 20:18

I'm glad puppy is fine!

I'm glad you're puppy is fine , I've always given my dog a little milk and white chocolate never dark it's never did her any harm and since she helped herself to a bag of twirl and was ok I'm not saying that all dog can do it it's depends on their system and body size the amount of chocolate I have had her since she was 4 now she 16 I'm not saying anyone should give their pets chocolate but it was alright for her

Then you’re very stupid and certainly shouldn’t be spouting nonsense like that on the internet as if it’s a great thing to do. Dogs don’t need chocolate and it can do them a lot of harm.
