If you know about good dog food, could you look at this?

We're adopting a dog from the Australian Assistance Dog Association. She's apparently too friendly to be a guide dog! I feed UnWiseDog1 Eukanuba dry dog food and have been OK with it. The trainers at AADA tell me they feed their dogs this. It's tricky to get but possible. Is it any better than the Eukanuba?

They are both pretty dire, to be honest.

In what way dire?

We adopted a very similar dog- the use the word 'distractable' but it means 'can't resist attention as so beautiful'.
Fed Royal Canin Labrador. When we've run out-oops- and had to get a small bag of whatever premium stuff to tide us over until the PetPlanet delivery arrives(it just would be something you can't pop to the shops for), we have been rewarded with dog farts from hell.
Follow their advice or buy a gas mask.

Agree they dont look great. Eukanuba isnt great. I'm finding it hard to find decent dry food in Germany. Royal Canin is also rubbish imho.

All fillers and not great quality ones at that - wheat especially, which is a really common allergen, maize, beet pulp etc. Very little actual meat involved. Same goes for Royal Canin which is eye-wateringly expensive for what is essentially a bag of wheat, corn and Bisto granules!

You want to look for a named meat source and, if a filler must be included as in all dry dog food, a decent quality one that is more digestible and less likely to cause allergies, skin conditions, ear infections etc. like potato, brown rice, barley.

Why not think about feeding raw? I changed my dog onto raw and she is thriving. Very easy, no nasties.

i feed fish4dogs. it is the only food that hasn't provided us with an 'aroma' after dinner. not sure if you can get it in OZ

I'm surprised that people don't think Royal Canin is good. We use the prescription (gastro) one for our labrador/ poodle cross and it's made an enormous difference to his sensitive stomach, and it also has very good dental care built in. We mix it with Naturdiet, which is very convenient and he loves it. James Wellbeloved is good too. I hear from some people that Orijen is very good.

Royal Canin is full of fillers and is generally bad quality. Obviously better than Bakers or Pedigree but still pretty bad.

I was recommended JWB but for our DDogs its like feeding them Haribo. Looked at the ingredients and its meat content isnt very high, we're going to start ordering Natures Diet from the UK.

The issue I have with Royal Canin is that it is about the same quality as many other foods - I'd lump Eukanuba, Arden Grange, Chudleys, CSJ, most Skinners, Purina etc. all in the same category - but it seems to command a much higher price just because of the shiny scientific packaging and the bullshit breed-specific formula claims.

All better than Pedigree, Bakers et al but only by a small margin. Check out the Dog Food Analysis reviews.
