How hard is it to train a labrador puppy?

I heard they are easy because of their love of food so food rewards and treats are good. What about combatting jumping up, mouthing and pulling on the lead? Are these problems easily solveable?

I must add some new pictures, he's twice the size of that now! We used Gwen Bailey's perfect puppy book as a starter because he couldn't go training until 2 weeks after his second injections. While we were waiting we socialised him in our garden with dogs we know were up to date on their vaccinations - our vet advised us to do this.

Like others have said we have had rules from the start, he can only go on the sofa or come upstairs if we tell him to and he has to get off straight away when we say so. We also made him sit and wait for his dinner, just holding him back and saying sit then wait to start with, by doing that he doesn't eat anything in the house now unless he's told that he can.

'Leave it' is also good to teach before you go out walking if your pup is anything like Barney. He tried to eat anything and everything off the pavement when we first got him! Also recall, Barney has been off the lead across the fields since he was about 14 weeks old and is usually really well behaved.

A lot of people say labs are easy to train because they're motivated by food but you'll find that they're just as motivated by massive amounts of cuddles and fuss too.

Can't wait to see pictures of your pup! Smile

Hi BoatingLakeDiva sorry for the late reply! we have a baby gate on the lounge at the minute as that is the only room downstairs he seems to have a habit of peeing in!
Good idea about keeping stairs out of bounds so the cat has somewhere to go!
Our little pup will be allowed upstairs eventually.
He's been a little bugger in the last few days - he keeps biting and chewing everything -in particular, shoes!
For some reason he seems to know which items are his and which aren't, and un surprisingly, the things that aren't his, are much more desirable to chew! Shock
What colour lab are you getting?
We had a black one growing up and she was lovely! My brother also has a black one now!

better late than never keepthechange - she will be yellow and there is less than three weeks to go now Grin. I am looking forward to implementing some of the advice we have received on here. I ordered the Gwen Bailey book too whcih I have had recommended to me so will start reading that this evening. I think I am a bit obsessed! I'm sure it will be a matter of muddling through but armed with information - bit like you do when you have your first baby.
