This has been a heartbreaking case. Belfast Council have not come out of it well. Sad
The only possible shred of good that can emerge is that it has really thrown a spotlight on the lunacy of this breed specific legislation. I do not know anyone involved with dog welfare who believes that the current situation has made anyone safer, and it has led to the needless death and imprisonment of many, many dogs. Angry

I may be being naive here so forgive me if so, but surely the owner knew full well this was an illegal breed when she got him, and that the risk associated with having an illegal dog is that it will be taken & destroyed.

The reports all say the dog was reported for behaving aggressively, again this lies at the owners door IMO. I'm not really sure what else the Council are supposed to have done?

Regardless of opinion of whether the law on dangerous breeds is right or wrong, at this stage it is the law and the owner has broken the law, surely?

I see a guy near me walking what looks suspiciously like an American Pit Bull sometimes, it's always muzzled and harnessed so at least he is being vaguely compliant and responsible, but he is still breaking the law by owning the dog. People own so-called dangerous dogs for their own image not because they love the breed unfortunately and their dogs have to pay the penalty Sad but it is the owners at fault, not the law enforcers?

hathorkicksass · 21/04/2012 08:52

Have you read anything about the case Scarlett?

Lennox is not an illegal breed. And FWIW there is no such thing as an illegal "breed" per se, it's "breed type".

And the evidence that BCC have put forward is sketchy to say the least.

I still want to know why, given the media attention the case has drawn and Lennox's 'aggressiveness', no-one has come forward to the media with their story of how he bit them/growled at them/lunged at them etc.

Not a single neighbour or fellow dog walker has spoken out about Lennox.

I wonder if that might be because it's never happened?

hathorkicksass · 21/04/2012 09:58

And if he's so aggressive how come there's photos of the BCC dog warden cuddling and playing with him?
