New puppy might be blind in one eye

hi please can I have words of wisdom and happy stories about how my adorable spaniel/ lab cross puppy might cope with only seeing with one eye? Just got back from having a check up and first jabs and one of her eyes is not responding to light at all - the pupil looks White if you look at it very closely. Nothing in her behaviour would indicate a problem - in fact I picked her because she seemed to be the most inquisitive and bold puppy of her litter. So far after having her since Saturday she has been a dream behaviour wise - calm, clean (no accidents at all!) and fun to play with. it is ironic as we wanted to get a cross breed thinking she would be healthier as our last dog (a pedigree mini dachshund) had terrible back problems. I am not going to return her and she didn't come from a registered breeder as she was on farm so don't feel there is a real issue there ( although I will let them know if problem is confirmed). Sods law her insurance won't cover it as I only took it out on the day we brought her home and she is still in her 2 week exemption period. I think (hope) that her quality of life won't be effected too much if this was something she was born with but positive stories would be great to hear! I haven't posted photos of her on my profile yet but will try to - the iPhone can't upload direct which is a pain.

My dog only has sight in one eye, she was attacked by another dog a few years ago and it damaged her eye badly.

The vet said he wouldn't remove it unless it caused her problems, which it hasn't.

She acts no differently than she did before; apart from cosmetically you wouldn't know she was blind in one eye.

Good luck with your pup Grin

Thanks that's good to hear. The vet is going to examine her again in 2 weeks when she goes for her second jab. Am now worrying is a sign of something more serious so fingers crossed is "only" her eye.

We have a rescue dog that was found wandering the streets that only has one eye. Other than the fact she's missing an eyeball, you couldn't tell that she only sees out of one eye, she gets along so well. They really do amazing at compensating with that. We were always worrying about her and babying her when we first got her, but it didn't take long to realize there is really no difference between her and our dog with two eyes, and most of the time we forget the fact that she does only have one eye.

Is she covered by any insurance from her breeder ?

Best to get a referral from your vet to a specialist who may have a better idea what you are dealing with.

Am under a specialist ourselves due to eye problems with our dog - she is partially sighted in one eye but it does not deter her at all - sometimes I have to make more movement when I recall her but other than that she is fine.

Many, many dogs live long and happy lives with sight in only one eye. These dogs are able to do everything a normal dog can. I have even in my career known dogs who have managed excellent quality of life with no sight at all.

Thanks all - is good to hear that there are loys of happy partially sighted dogs out there! I am going to call the breeders today - she is such a sweet puppy that I don't want to give her back - I do think we'll have to have a full diagnosis from a specialist though- fingers crossed. On a massive positive point she was clean for the 5 th night in a row last night - I have been gradually increasing her crate time and she managed 7 hours last night giving me a wake call at 6.30 proud mother!

Hi my little dog daisy was attacked by anow aggressive German Shepherd that got out its gate! Within seconds it had pounced on our little dog. Her right eye had popped and she needed to be rushed to the vet. We were told that tests showed that she had lost her sight in the damaged eye and it had to come out. Still waiting on her coming out of surgery! Everything going through my mind, how will she cope , will she still be the placid happy going dog, how will the attack affect her emotionally. 😓

The poor thing @Shannon :( I hope she recovers well.

I'd try and find some friendly, placid little dogs for her to meet asap once she's able to test her on and see how she reacts (do you have any friends with a dog that might fit the bill?). Then, if that is fine, try some larger dogs etc

If she is unhappy in the presence of other dogs at all, get a good behaviourist (not trainer) in pronto to try and nip any problems in the bud. Many a dog has become dog reactive after becoming attacked (though I've also had a dog that was horribly attacked years ago and retained his happy go lucky nature) and if there are problems it will be quicker to deal with it sooner rather than later.

There are lots of cowboys calling themselves behaviourists, so look for someone who is CCAB or APBC accredited. Some insurance companies (Inc PetPlan) will cover behaviour issues, so it may not cost you anything

Anyway, that's the worst case scenario - hopefully your dog will recover well and be able to continue getting along happily with other dogs without any intervention.
