Doglet has torn a layer off the largest pad on a front leg, she is limping and generally sad. Its an area about the size of a 5p, maybe slightly bigger. Its not bleeding, she is licking it. What should I do?

Our dog did this, and it took a while to heal. We covered her foot with a baby sock and shedloads of duct tape ( the duct tape was our desperate solution instead of the bandage tape thingie that the vet gave us. She would NOT leave it alone!).

We had to add a plastic bag when she went out into the garden to do her business as we had to keep it as dry as possible.

We also ended up buying a single doggie boot from the posh dog shop and that really helped.

But all in all I think it took about 3 weeks to heal properly with no walks... When she was almost healed I cello taped and bagged her up for the first week or so.

She was not amused.... Good luck and I hope your dog heals faster, she definitely should if she leaves it alone!

take her to the vet, or at least phone them for advice, you dont want this to get infected

Chocdee, My girl had to have her paw banaged for weeks and we protected it by putting a bag over the bandage (with tie handles) and then sliding a sock over that. It stopped the bag flapping and kept it in place long enough for her to be clean. We got through a few socks as it was during bad weather, but between us, we had several odd ones Grin

SwearyMary, poor doglet. It's difficult to really tell from your post how bad it is, but I'd probably pop mine to the vets for this sort of thing, just to be sure that it was clean etc. Having had loads of dogs, I kinda have a feel now for which cuts need treating and which just need a good clean and a bit of protection. We keep a bottle of Hibiscrub in, and always clean with that.

Thanks for the advice. I will ring the vet in the morning for advice. She has been quiet today and resting. The wound is dry, ther isn't any fluid leaking from it and it doesn't look red or raw. Its clearly sore though.
