Runny eyes

Would you always take runny eyes to the vet or leave it a few days first? Doesn't look bad, whitish. Otherwise healthy. He's been swimming a lot in last few days.

Belinda,

My dog just had this. It was a whitish discharge and then turned greenish white. It might have been conjunctivitis. Anyway, we just cleaned it twice a day and now it is gone.

Ditto.

My dog had a runny eye for a couple of days and I was just about to take her to the vet but it cleared up on it's own. I think I may have got shampoo in it when I was giving her a bath Blush. I wouldn't leave it longer than that though as there can be some serious ocular conditions that can manifest via discharge (ie: ectropion/entropion).

Please please take him to the vet, for anything to do with eyes. Eye problems can become very serious very quickly.

belindarose · 03/04/2012 07:34

Thanks, I'll take him today.

Good luck. Let us know how he gets on. Smile

Got 7 days of eye drops. Fortunately he's very good at having them done!

Belinda, what was the diagnosis? Glad it is sorted!

belindarose · 03/04/2012 19:27

Conjunctivitis. He does like to spend half his time in brambles or gorse bushes, so I wanted to make sure there were no thorns in the eyes. Unlikely, being both eyes, but I wouldn't put it past him!

I know, they are not very safety conscious, are they Sad

belindarose · 03/04/2012 19:37

He doesn't care! Tip of tail is always bleeding after a walk as he catches it on something everytime. I love his doggy attitude!

bit late but I always jut use eye drops, from boots alwys cleared up in a couple of days.

belindarose · 03/04/2012 20:00

Do you? That would be much cheaper. In fact, it'd be much cheaper to get my own prescription for eye drops!

When we took our dog to the vet with runny eyes, he dropped something fluorescent green in his eye and looked at it first, to check for any damage to the eye. He said that it was only safe to give the eye drops after doing this. He didn't explain in any more detail than that, but just so you know - you could always ask your vet for advice on that.

ditavonteesed · 03/04/2012 21:07

that is what they did at the hospital for my dd last week after she had a pencil jammed in.

belindarose · 03/04/2012 21:07

She had a pencil in her eye?? Ow! Is she okay?

OP posts:
RedwingWinter · 03/04/2012 21:08

Ouch! I hope she's okay.

TerrierMalpropre · 03/04/2012 21:54

Oh God, Dita! Really? Hope she's alright? I still have pencil lead in my hand from an altercation with my brother, aged 7.

ditavonteesed · 04/04/2012 16:44

thanks for the worries, she was fine, school were in complete panic mode, she got an afternoon off school a trip to the hospital, some eye cream and an ice cream (always the most important bit) healed in a couple of days, apparently eyes are the quickest to heal
