grrrrrrr, walking in park again, cherry onlead and completly under control and a puppy ran up, saw it from quite a way off so I say to the owners my dog is aggressive, as the puppy was ignoring them and coming right up I said do you mind if I get your puppy and got hold of the puppy by the collar at one arms length while holding cherry at the other arms length. the woman then had a go about who brings an aggresive dog to the park. My dog was on the lead and completly under control, yours wasnt. Angry

I used to purposely walk my fear aggressive dog through the park at the busier times to train him.

It's a little difficult to train your dog to ignore other dogs if you never let them see other dogs.

However we stayed away from the off leash part of the park.

He still cannot always be trusted when off lead dogs run upto him while he is still leashed but he can walk past other dogs and ignore them and calmly greet other leashed dogs in a controlled manner.

Plus I've learnt when numpty time is at our local park. Unfortunately it is getting very close to numpty season when all times are numpty times. Oh joy. Hopefully the progress he has shown in all his training lately will show through in his reaction to off leash dogs with very little training who come tearing upto him despite me asking the owners to control them, if not it's back to walking him alone and away from the park Sad

its alright for a bit dooin, weathers turned a bit today, bet if I took the dogs in the park today I would have the place to myself. Someties I get fed up of having to driive half an hour to have a nice walk when I have a lovely park 10 metres away from my house and I have as much right to walk there as anybody else.

He was fine...he only really bled as it still had it's puppy teeth and no sense to not nip, I didn't blame the pup it was playing and freaked out. Believe me, I've had dogs all my life. I don't have a perfect dog, nor am I a perfect owner, but people like that women make me furious.

However, people on Mnet do think I am nice, and I mostly am, so I shall decline to say exactly what I said to the woman in question but I did make her cry

They are dogs not children and need to be treated as dogs. hey can be members of your family, as long as they know they are dogs.

My friends elderly Heeler Terrier was killed this week by a young pit cross dog Sad.

The young dog went to turn on a man's soft Rottweiler, so the other dog that he had with him, attacked it and killed it (both on leads).

My friend is elderly and still hasn't recovered.

If you haven't got reliable recall, you shouldn't let your dog off the lead, especially in crowded places on hot days.

Honeydragon · 31/03/2012 16:12

"If you haven't got reliable recall, you shouldn't let your dog off the lead"

Sorry, but how do you train reliable recall if you do not have your dog offlead. A genuine question. Do you actually have a dog?

Birdsgottafly · 31/03/2012 18:07

I have GS's, always have had, read my post, i said in a busy place, in hot weather.

I had a rescue aggressive male (through fear), it meant that i had to use friends dogs, either very early or late, but that is the commintment that you give a dog.

You use food to build recall and start off slowly, a park during peak off school hours, isn't the way to do it.

bemybebe · 31/03/2012 18:25

food/toys/play is a very good start but not all dogs are motivated by those. i agree that going to busy public with an aggressive dog off lead is a no-no, but "reliable recall" is different from an "aggressive dog"

i have lived with dogs (and trained them) all my life apart from the time when I was in the uni or working ft (including GS). i always felt that the first thing an owner needs to do is to let their dogs socialize, to read the signals of others and be free to give its own signals that can be read by others. it is best done in controlled environement of course, but if the owner is not able to go to properly conducted classes, then parks are ok.

OP dealt with the situation beautifully, it is disappointing that the owners of the other dog were not sensitive to her concerns.

I agree that owners should not allow their dogs to approach on lead dogs. Absolutely. However, we all know that in the real world this does not happen. For that reason I would never walk my dog aggressive dog in the park or anywhere where there are likely to be off lead dogs. Instead, we just try and bump into as many on lead dogs as we can on walks or hang around near the park entrance where there are lots of dogs but on leads.

It would be obvious to any other dog from quite some distance since he is very reactive, that he was not approachable, but I know from experience that that doesn't always stop other dogs approaching anyway and I would never forgive myself if he injured another dog. He will not wear a muzzle, it would make things much easier if he would as people do make an effort to keep their dogs away from muzzled dogs.
