We have been looking at getting a second dog for a few months. We decided to leave it a little while, but now I am absolutely besotted by a pooch on Dogs Blog.

Come and tell me to snap out of it please. Two male dogs won't work even if one is neutered will it? And rescues don't re-home to families with 3yo and 6yo DC do they.

He sounds perfect for us and is even cat friendly Sad

Two male dogs can be fine, even if neither is neutered.

G'wan, check it outGrin

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 30/03/2012 18:57

I can't, I've not even told DH yet Grin

Do you want to see him? (Pooch, not DH!)

Ahh tugging at the heart strings is he. But puzzled why you think two male dogs won't work? I've got two, one castrated and the other not as yet (2yo) but will be getting him done soon and they are fine together. Any other reasons why you think it would be a bad idea?

We have a Lab, so not huge, 32kg. Last dog was a Weimaraner so DC are quite used to large dogs knocking about the place Grin

I tend to walk the dog without DC for the majority of the time as I see it as 'Me time'

Unless we all go out for the day as a family, obviously.

Isn't he just gorgeous. Smile

I want him!

Aww he's really lovely!
I love dogs with 'eyebrows'
Heartmelt.

Does say he's best with over 8s though... Grin

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 30/03/2012 19:10

he is gorgeous. all I have to say sorry.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 30/03/2012 19:58

aw what a cutie pie.

errrrr cant talk you out of it, but he is young and probably a bit boisterous, so do use caution as your youngest might be used as a play mate.

If your family is used to large dogs then I say contact rescue and see what they have to say.

I fell in love with a GSD that said over 16s only. I took my 10 year old DS with me to meet her and asked the rehoming manager to interview him as he had grown up with GSDs from the age of 8mths.

She spoke to him and then said we could go in the run with the dog and see how we got on as she didn't like strangers. The dog sniffed me and DH, then climbed on DSs knee and smothered him in kisses. Over 5 years on, they are inseperable. Just ask, they would rather he went to a home with big dog savvy kids than stay in kennels.

Now you have put the link to the beautiful Bonzo on the forum, you are going to have competition for him, so I suggest you pick up the phone NOW and start dialling. Go on, NOW, just do it. Cos if you don't I might!

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 30/03/2012 20:04

He is gorgeous, I love GSDs.

We have had two (even three) male dogs at the same time. I have to admit it is much easier having a dog and a bitch, but it can work.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 30/03/2012 20:14

Have e-mailed them, asking re younger children.

DH is going to go mad, isn't he?

Sometimes a dog is meant to be yours --although I think that about many dogs I see on rescue sites-

I fell in love with SmallDog's picture - we went to see him just to have a look and the rest was history, technically he wasn't the right dog for us but it turned out to be a good decision. although he does take up a disproportionate amount of space on our shared chair

WineGoggles · 30/03/2012 21:20

Oooh, he's so gorgeous! What a handsome young fella :o He looks a bit Dobermannish too, so wonder what the GSD was crossed with.

AllergicToNutters · 30/03/2012 23:18

ring ring ring !!! Bonzo is absolutely stunning. I hope you get a look in Smile

PurpleWithaBlueBun · 31/03/2012 00:15

You will have to update the thread, he is a cutie :) My local rescue has a beautiful St Bernard I can't have a Dog yet though.

Ephiny · 31/03/2012 07:47

We have two male dogs (Rotts) and they get on fine (barring a few squabbles in the first few days), it needn't be a problem at all. Ours are both neutered and both older boys though.

He looks absolutely lovely - the only thing I'd be concerned about is that his age and size/breed mix (Doberman cross, do you think?) he could be a bit of a handful, especially if he hasn't had much training so far, but if you're experienced with large breeds and confident you can manage then you should be fine.
