A week ago my 2.5 yr old labradoodle had a general anaesthetic as the vet had to cut the hair in her ears as she had an infection.

She has had 3 anaesthetics before and there has never been a problems.

We took her home and she has been lethargic, quiet, no appetite and no bounce since. I have been back to the vets almost every day. He took some bloods on Weds and the results came back that she has kidney disease, the actual tests were raised urea and raised creatinine. He has given us tablets to stop her feeling sick as he said the most important thing over the next few days is to get her eating and drinking.

I hand fed her chicken last night and she ate quite a bit and also drank, which was brilliant, she also ate this morning. We have to try and get as much food and liquid in her over the weekend and are back at the vets on Monday.

Can anyone please give me any advice as to what we can do to help her, we are absolutely heartbroken, I hardly heard anything that the vet said, apart from kidney disease.

Up to a week ago she was the bounicest, happiest, nuttiest dog in the land and its horrible to see her as she is.

My DD and SD are in the middle of A levels and GCSE's so I dont want to tell them anything until I can offer a positive outcome.

Please if anyone has been throght this what can we do.

Yes,I do have first hand experience,as my last dog suffered from this.
My first thought would be the vet should be running more tests to rule out other causes, such as infection, poisoning, bladder etc.
If your dog does have kidney disease,at such a young age, then quite often it is hereditary..please inform the breeder!!
Unfortunately I wish I could say to you there is a magic cure, but barr a transplant, then care is only pallitive, keeping her blood numbers down ,through diet, medication, avoiding stress etc.
From first diagnosis my dog lived another 2 years, and I fed her a homecooked diet that I carefully formulated.
I sure the vet will be able to tell you more on Monday.
I am so sorry,I wish I could be more positive...but fingers crossed there is another cause for the high numbers.

Hi bobbybear thanks for responding. She has been on and off iv drips as she was so dehydrated and seems so much betterSmile

With your experience is there anything specific I should ask the vet? I am going to ask for a referral to a specialist vet, my vet is lovely, but he is a one man practice and quite staid, i don't think he has those up to date equipment or practices.

Yes,change vets if you are not happy...mine were useless, basically handed me a tin of prescription kidney food(which she would not eat)and a packet of heart pills(fortekor) which help the blood flow to the kidneys.
What you have to understand is that by the time symptoms of kidney disease show(increased thirst, urination, loss of appetite and sickness) there is less than 25% of the kidneys working. What you have to establish is whether this is chronic, and not caused by an infection etc.The vet will perform an ultrasound to establish the state of the kidneys ,he will take a urine test, failing kidneys leak protein into the urine and take blood and check the urea and creatinine.
You cannot reverse kidney failure, but iv fluids will help flush toxins out of the blood.
Diet can help drastically and the new thought on this is that phosphorous not protein causes further damage to the kidneys.
I found this group a lifesaver at times, yahoo k9kidneys(be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster). Most of the group are USA based where treatment seems more advanced.
Hope this helps.
