Buying a second hand Dalmatian

Heswall · 18/03/2012 11:17

I spotted an advert for a 7 month old Dalmatian which I feel might be ideal for us as he is house trained which is the stage I dread. He has been brought up with children and I presume the family have just not got time for the animal. I'd planned to get them to take him to the vets and get me a health report before buying him but wondered if anyone has any other advice for this situation ?
Thank you

2nd hand!?

Do not buy a Dalmatian or any dog from an advert unless it is from a reputable breeder.

I have Dalmatians and I can tell you that most people rehome at 7 month because this is when they become difficult.
Do you have roughly 3 hours per day for exercise and training. Dalmatian's do not like being left along. The shed hair constantly, I have to hoover 3 x per day.
Male Dally's can be head strong. Training if a lifetime commitment, they need constant training their whole lives.
If you cannot commit to 2 - 3 hours per day plus a few long runs a week, your Dally will become bored and destructive.

But above anything DO NOT buy one from an advert, this family is getting rid of him for a reason, they need to hand him over to a reputable rescue or Dalmatian Welfare.

If you would like a Dalmatian, if you have the time to commit to them then please please go through Dalmatian Welfare or a good rescue.

I am happy to answer any other questions you have about Dally's but please dont get this particular one, you have no idea if he has problem (the family wont tell you as they want rid of him). Dalmatian's are certainly not for 1st time dog owners.

Dalmatian Welfare

They are in my opinion quite conservative with regard to how much exercise they need
