I think my dog might be gifted & talented!

I think there should be a MN register.

He shut himself in the playroom this morning and was barking to be let out. As I opened the door I commented to him that if he only hadn't run off with the doorstop, he wouldn't have got stuck. He went straight into the kitchen, rummaged about under the table, and came running back to me WITH THE DOORSTOP IN HIS MOUTH!!!
Yay! Grin Genius or what? And he's not 1 year old yet. Can't fetch and drop a ball but who cares? He has A Talent!

Come on, who can beat this?

Very similar, not quite as impressive though....

One morning I was laid out on the sofa and couldn't really be bothered to deal with the dog who was now starting to wake up.

She came and stared expectantly at me, so I said to her "Where's your ball, is it in the kitchen?" and she immediately trotted off, went into the kitchen and came back with her ball! (and my dog does NOT retrieve either!).

We've since tested her, and it turns out she has somehow managed to learn "Where's your ball?" but on that particular day I was completely dumbfounded.

clam · 18/03/2012 13:55

What, no one else?! Does this mean I can take the prize?
(feesh I am impressed with yours too, of course Grin)

Bless!

I was folding a pile of towels the other day and our mad black lab went and got her towel from her basket! Not sure if she was suggesting I washed it!

axure · 18/03/2012 14:09

My girl can open doors with handles, pushing or pulling as required. She also watches TV and cries whenever animals are on. My boy is totally thick, but adorable.

FruitShootsAndHeaves · 18/03/2012 16:55

My dog can sleep completely upside down whilst snoring and dribbling simultaneously, surely that is genius?

bumbez · 18/03/2012 17:27

My 12 week old puppy noticed me wearing 1 slipper so helpfully retrieved the other one for me, from a random place he'd deposited it earlier!

clam · 18/03/2012 23:01

Ah now, bumbez that's approaching the sort of genius mine has displayed, assuming it wasn't a random flukey coincidence.

My dog can tell the time. Every Wednesday at 6.30 and every Sunday morning at 9.30 (when we go training) he pulls my Wellies into the kitchen and barks at me.

He also found me a £10 note once, whilst out on a walk.

Genius.!

D0oinMeCleanin · 19/03/2012 10:17

The Devil Dog built his very own kennel. Beat that! Grin Wink

Well, when I say built, what I mean is he ate a Devil Dog sized hole into the door of the outdoor loo Angry, which is now used for storing crap we need to throw out and had a handy, broken suitcase in it. Although there now appears to be a pillow in the suitcase that was not there before. We still have not worked out where he found that or how it came to be inside the suitcase.

My GSD (now sadly gone) used to be able to open the baby gate.
You could tell her to bring her toys in off the patio.
She would help bring the shopping in from the car (boxes and packets) and put them on the floor in the kitchen.
If you asked her where was xxx (cat one) she would go and look outside first as thats where cat one usually was.
If you asked where yyy (cat two) was she went and stood at the bottom of the stairs as cat two spent the majority of time up stairs.
Once when DH went away I let her sleep on the bed with me.
The next time DH went away, as I started to lock up and turn lights off she stood at the bottom of the stairs with one paw on the stairs and an expession that said ' I know he isnt here so I'm coming to bed with you, thats what I do now'.

clam · 19/03/2012 12:35

Hmm, I can see there might be some competition for this trophy! Envy

I do like the £10 note idea. Might work on that...

My dog has decided one of DDs tiny teddies is hers, it says I love you when squeezed, (in possibly the most annoting voice ever). When I come in she runs and gets it, squeezes it and gives it to me Grin.

Primrose123 · 19/03/2012 12:47

My lovely whippet cross used to like to sit in the front seat of my car when i was driving. She would look through the windscreen, and then lean one way to make up for the bends in the road before we got to them.

idohopenot · 19/03/2012 12:52

I think you will still need a tutor to get him into a super selective grammar. Competition is very hot these days.

My youngest dog seems quite dim most of the time but occasionally shows flashes of genius.
One day when he was a tiny pup, he was desperately trying to get onto the sofa. After trying and failing several times, he dragged his puppy bed from the other side of the room, stood on it and climbed onto the sofa!

frownieface · 20/03/2012 11:18

Well one of my labs can open and close doors, he will go through his toy box and find a specific toy then put the other toys back, and one time about a month ago he jumped up on the armchair grabbed the blanket on the back and made a bed for himself on the floor (he has a sofa).

My other lab on the other hand... Grin

Mine takes the biscuit, literally

Food in the middle of our massive kitchen table that sits 12, is gone when we come home. She has obviously sat down on one of the chairs to eat as well as there is dog hair and dirt on it, she hasn't learnt to push it back in yet, but neither have the kids

Hebiegebies · 20/03/2012 11:27

Blush DH tells me that our dog uses the chair to climb onto the table. I therefore remove my dog from the gifted and talented register Wink

MrsZoidberg · 20/03/2012 11:32

Well my dog can talk!

I was rushing to get out of the house one day, when I said to DS "right what have I forgotten?" From behind me came the answer "Coat", so I grabbed it and turned round to find DS staring at the dog, mouth open, stunned look on his face - that's when I realised my HuskyX was the one who had answered and not DS!

She can also say "Helloooooooo" when we get up, and "Towel" when we are teasing her (she has a comfort towel) - she never repeated the Coat though

Love Huskies, she doesn't bark but does talk and howl Grin

Shame I can't get her to tell me what she wants when she's racing round the house looking for something, or to ask nicely to go out rather than launch herself at one of us, but maybe I'll keep trying to train her. Of all the dogs I've been owned by, she's the one I'd love to sit down and have a conversation with.

clam · 20/03/2012 12:02

"find a specific toy then put the other toys back"
Now if only he could teach the kids to do that too! I mean, surely they wouldn't want to be outshone by a dog?

I'm afraid I have to report that my dog has had to be demoted from G&T to SEN. Dh threw a stick for him which landed in the river. Dim dog bounced after it and on three occasions didn't even notice it float past his nose.

musicposy · 20/03/2012 22:50

Oh dear, clam, that's a long way to fall!

Dog1 understands English perfectly. He picks up on everything we say. If we mention something about him in normal conversation, he will respond. In fairness, he's had 10 years to learn English which makes it not quite so stunning. And he is scared of windscreen wipers, despite the fact that one has never attacked him. Hmm

Dog2 is definitely G&T Grin. She doesn't have quite the grasp of English, but she says "hello" really nicely. She can also let herself out of the dog crate . This involves pushing the door and sticking her nose through and lifting at the same time. She worked that out on her own. Genius. She can also open doors, even ones that go inwards.

Actually most of her clever stuff involves getting where she wants to be usually to steal food.

We tried dog intelligence tests on them both. Dog2 got an enormous score, came out virtually at the top, and Dog1 as pretty darned thick. However, we suspect this is because it involved putting food under towels etc and Dog2 is naughty enough to get what she wants, no matter what it takes, whereas Dog1 just looked at us pathetically most of the time, scared of being told off!
