Soft coated Wheaten terrier

we are thinking of adding a dog to our family. I grew up with terriers and I love dogs and especially terriers, I had no idea such a beautiful dog could exist until I saw one of these today.

So does anyone have any experience of wheaten terriers? Would they be ok if we were lucky enough to have a baby in the next year?

Any I have met over the year grooming have been mad as hatters but mostly lovely dogs. The coat is soft, not typical terrier wire and will matt very easily if not groomed regularly. They have big powerful jaws and heads (think bigger than a Kerry Blue) and strong willed with terrier nature to get into dirt all day long, faces will be dripping dirt after a good walk :-) I'm not sure obedience is their strength and they do need exercise and kept mentally occupied.

Contact a breed club and they'll put you in touch with responsible breeders, do your research well and stay clear of all the usual free selling websites.

A baby and a puppy are very very hard work and SCWT will require a lot of work, especially if you get one soon and the puppy hits the dreaded teenage years just as you settle down with a new born demanding all your time.

As my Mum would say.. 'think long and hard my girl' don't rush in.

When I was asking my vet about suitable breeds for me and my young family, she advised against any terriers. (She was advising about general breed suitability, I am well aware that there are many individual terriers who do brilliantly with young families.) My two friends with them have two gorgeous ones though - one just destroyed the ipad whilst they were out for dinner with us Grin.

Thanks both, yes shouty that is something I was worried about and thinking of putting it off for a while, we had our first terrier (cairn) when I was 4 and he was honestly my best friend in the world back then, I would love dd to have the same relationship with a pup. He never bit anyone in his 18 years.

Multipoodles I will definitely be thinking long and hard, dogs really are my best friends but its the balance between dog and children I want to get completely right. I met a scwt, he was very bouncy and big with beautiful hair, I love little terriers but we live in a farmhouse and I would like a big dog to help me feel safe (silly I know) but with all the fun of a terrier, he (I would like a boy) would have a field to run around in and be well loved. I have definitely found the right breed it's now just about the right time.
