My brain has gone blank. Jasper sits, gives the paw, turns around, lays down, rolls over, leaves it (for a bit), stays (sort of), goes to his bed, fetches and drops. But I won't be able to get him out for a walk until DH gets home from work this evening, and need to keep him occupied. So, what's your favourite dog trick and how did you teach it?

Not a trick but atm I'm trying to teach, Stand from sitting, Stand from laying down and the other way round.

Have'nt gotten past Stand from sitting yet...

She doesnt get it but I'm still trying Grin

Shut the door, a biscuit on top of the door so that it falls of when the door shuts, lots of saying shut the door and pointing and encouraging of pushing it shut...repeat, when they start to get it you move further away and do it from there, till you can sit on the couch and have the dog shut the door for you.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 16/03/2012 09:56

tabulah - thats genius! I wonder if I can train my cats to do that - they are experts in pushing the door wide open!

ObviouslyOblivious · 16/03/2012 09:58

The elephant trick. Front legs on a box or biscuit tin, dog moves around keeping front legs on the box.

In the box or on the box. Dog puts all four legs into or onto a box.

tabulahrasa · 16/03/2012 10:01

My last two dogs have shut doors on command, it's handy and impresses visitors, lol, but I can only get one of my cats to come when I call it's name nevermind do tricks - so I suspect you're on to a hiding to nothing there badkitten tbh

ohyouBadBadkitten · 16/03/2012 10:04

oh well - I could resort to plan a - to install catflaps in all our doors!

Slubberdegullion · 16/03/2012 10:07

Tbh imo the most useful tricks to really work on are a bomb proof 'leave it' and a bomb proof 'in your bed'. Both of those things are absoultely fabulous to have down-pat as it were for emergency situations.

(see episode last night where dd1 spectacularly vomited into my croc, amongst other things (those holes really drain product well), and I had to perform an emergency 'leave IT!!!!' and 'In your bed' before a canine criminal act of utmost revoltingness was performed).

Basically work on both of those things but increase distractions, throw food, dance around, lie on the floor etc etc clicking and treating at will.

Inthepotty · 16/03/2012 11:29

High five?

'Speak' on command?

Hide and seek, (get him using that nose!) with a toy?

Hide your eyes/go shy is dead easy to teach and looks impressive.

Walk backwards or under your legs.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 16/03/2012 12:00

Inthepotty, how do I train 'go shy'? I have a clicker and cheese

Inthepotty · 16/03/2012 12:15

Get dog in a down.

You can use a sticky label or lead draped over the nose- I used a peppa pig sticker as we have an abundance! Every time dog goes to swipe it off, click and treat. Repeat, repeat repeat! You can hold off on the click treat until dog has swiped nose a few times if you like.

Fade out sticker, my boy needed a bit of help now, I used to tap his nose withy little finger whilst saying 'are you shy?' in my most sympathetic voice!

Now when I ask for 'shy' and 'wait' he drops to his belly and hides his eyes in he cutest way until I say 'ok'.

belindarose · 16/03/2012 17:18

What did you choose and how did it go?

ChickensHaveNoLips · 16/03/2012 17:22

We had a go at 'go shy', but it was a bit hit and miss. He didn't try to swipe anything from his nose, he just tried to eat it and ran around in circles. So, I had to put his paw on his nose, then ay 'go shy', then click and treat. He started holding his paw up for me, so I hink we both somewhat missed the point. We did go over all of his basic stuff, too. I just gave him his kibble by sprinkling it all over the lawn, so that kept him occupied for a bit. DH home soon, so at last we can leave the house

I like to sprinkle meals all over the garden too. New bones are always good for days like that. I'm trying to keep a supply in the freezer, but he does get through them quicker than the butcher can provide!

ChickensHaveNoLips · 16/03/2012 19:56

God help me. DH took Jasper for a half hour run over the field when he got in, lots of mad dashing about after a ball etc. Since he's been back he has stolen a thermometer, a packet of Lockets, half a pack of butter and a tape measure. He runs a lap of the living room, brandishing said contraband, then high tails it out again until you chase him And he nicked the free paper earlier and shredded it all over the garden

Ha, we had that yesterday when I couldn't take ours out! Mental all evening. Kept humping me too, which he never does now. Still slept all night though. Hope you get a better day tomorrow.
