I'm trying to persuade her to send him to breed rescue but she isn't listening, reckons they'll pts after a while. She has just moved to a flat so can't keep him any longer. She's convinced she'll find him a good home. What can I tell her to persuade her to send him to rescue???

Maybe tell her to look for 'no kill' rescue and then her concern of him being pts would be a problem?

Maybe some of the lovely MNers on here who have knowledge of rescue centres could help?

GrittersWifeAndProud · 09/03/2012 17:18

I told her no decent rescue would EVER put a healthy dog down. She said I was blind if I believed that and it's her dog so she's selling him. Then she de-friended me on fb which is where this conversation took place.

There's nothing you can do then- she is clearly a bit of a twat and doesn't want to listen.

RedwingWinter · 09/03/2012 18:14

A breed rescue is better than a general one, but it might be hard to find one with space right now.

Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain Welfare says it has a 3 month waiting list at the moment.

There's Siberian Husky Welfare Association

And there's Huskies in Need but their web page refers to a 5-6 month waiting list.

RedwingWinter · 09/03/2012 18:25

I don't actually understand why she is re-homing him. Why does living in a flat mean she can't keep him? So long as the dog gets plenty of exercise, it's no problem.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 09/03/2012 18:26

Oh she didn't defriend me afterall, there's someone on her status arguing the same as me now. I sent her a link to SHWA too.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 09/03/2012 18:27

Must be a tiny flat, she says it's not fair on him because there isn't enough room for him.

If you give the approximate part of the country, someone else might know a good local rescue too. She can read about the rescues on their websites and reassure herself that they will take proper care of the dog. She is right there are some so-called 'rescues' (i.e. pounds) that might pts if a dog isn't found a home within a certain time. But a proper rescue will give lots of support for the lifetime of the dog. She's go no way of knowing whether a random person will take good care of him.

toboldlygo · 09/03/2012 18:49

Siberian Husky Welfare Association will take him - they do have a waiting list as well but not nearly so long as the other two. SHCGB Welfare only take KC registered dogs, Huskies in Need is a bit more of a disparate group and they take crossbreeds as well.

SHWA will not put a dog down - they just refuse to take any with unworkable temperament or health issues and would probably advise the owner to PTS in that instance - they foster in the home, not in kennels, hence the need to assess dogs and turn away any with serious aggression issues.

If she is within a couple of hours of Shropshire I can pick up the dog within a matter of days and assess it for SHWA, then hold it until they can find a foster home. I can't foster myself long term because I don't have a garden and have a very small house - I still manage to keep a pair of working huskies happy and healthy, a flat is no obstacle if she's prepared to put the work in, though I suspect not.

At £80 he will end up at best with some meathead looking for a status dog who will let him off the lead in the park and have him run over or shot within the week, at worst he will end up bait for a dog fighting ring. SHWA had one in last year who had been tied up with wire and used to bait fighting dogs in training.

If she goes online and fills in the relinquish form they will take this dog in no problem.

LaCoccinelle · 09/03/2012 19:43

There is also SHARE husky rescue, I'm pretty sure they'd cover Lincolnshire, they're local to me in South Yorkshire and fairly new.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 09/03/2012 21:12

Thanks everyone, but I think she's a lost cause. I've been told this is her 3rd dog in 12 months. She had a horse on loan and didn't visit it for 3 weeks and she only went back because the owner of the yard it was at pretended she was going to call the knackers to take it away, she had 2 pups and fed them adult working dog food. She just doesn't give two shits tbh even though she pretends she does :(

oldqueenie · 09/03/2012 21:57

why is she your friend? she sounds irresponsible, cruel to animals, unreasonable and stupid.

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 07:36

We went to school together, shared the same passion for horses and animals (or at least I thought we did) and we did our school work experience together at a riding school. We've not spoken for a couple of years now but still friendly, I said friend because I started this thread before I realised exactly what a heartless bitch she obviously is :(

OP posts:
Ephiny · 10/03/2012 07:51

What happened to the other two dogs? :(

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 09:36

I think they're long gone :(

OP posts:
oldqueenie · 10/03/2012 09:54

you could send her the helpful links posted on here, tell her what you think and what she should / shouldn't do.... you will have been honest with her and helpful.
or maybe your in a position to take the dog from her having arranged for a rescue to take it on in advance...

GrittersWifeAndProud · 10/03/2012 10:03

I can't take him, I'm really badly allergic to most dogs except my greyhound, and I have an 8mo DD who is just starting to crawl around.

I've tried to be helpful, posted her links to rescues, told her what could happen to him if the home she found for him couldn't keep him.

What's ironic is, she bought him with the promise to his old owner that she'd keep him forever. Now she's getting rid and saying that she'll make sure he goes to (yet another) "forever" home :(

RedwingWinter · 10/03/2012 21:13

That's really sad, Gritters. At least you tried to help.

RSPCA contact page

There was another thread like this about 2 weeks back and I'd still be inclined to contact the RSPCA for advice, she may not be being actively cruel but she's obviously unfit to own an animal, I would mention the horse issue as well. Don't know if they can do something, but it's worth a try.

WyrdMother · 10/03/2012 21:45

Posted too quick...

Won't necessarily help the current dog, though they may be able to convince her re. re-homing, but is she's on their radar it might stop her getting more anmals. We can only hope. Sad

GrittersWifeAndProud · 15/03/2012 17:22

Well the husky has been sold afaik, she's now giving away 7mo cats Hmm
