Any ideas? We live in NW. Got two Borders. Don't want to go hundreds of miles or spend thousands. We like eating and drinking (ESP the latter) - need good walking for the hounds, poss cycling for DH, pref broadband for moi ( need to keep up on here) - we have a 13 y o DS.

I have seen a few places but would prefer recommendations. Don't mind hotel or cottage though cottages tend to work out expensive as only three of us.

Would really appreciate recommendations.

i recently took my ds and labrador for 4 days away based in matlock bath. found a dog friendly b&b and had a room on the ground floor that had a door onto the back yard and a double and single bed and ensuite bathroom. ideal and not overly expensive.

walks on the doorstep - over the river and up the gorge the other side or up into the hills behind and over through woods into neighbouring village, up to the high tor etc or if you were driving you have the whole of the peak district open to you.

the place was ideal because it was totally dog friendly with all the pubs serving food having no issues with dogs coming in and being open to kids till 9pm.

sorry if this is too specific but i reckon if you head for a little tourist town in a walking area of the country you're on a sure bet for dog friendly pubs where you can eat and they don't mind muddy boots etc.

(oh and you have the heights of abraham if ds likes cable cars and caves and dogs are allowed on the cable cars you just have to have one of you wait outside with them whilst you do the cavern tours)

One option we've done that worked surprisingly well was staying in a Travelodge. They allow dogs in the rooms for a small extra charge. If you snap up some of their room deals this can work out as a very cheap break.

I'm one of those that raves about Little Dumpledale. The location and accommodation are great, but what really makes it special is that it is so utterly and completely dog friendly. You can relax in the knowledge that every garden is securely fenced to a height that will defeat the bounciest lurcher, there is NO limit on the number of dogs (think the record is 19), and a lot of thought has gone into ensuring the properties are well designed for people and for dogs. There's also none of this prissy "we only allow one dog, and it must stay downstairs, and wipe its feet, and mustn't get on the furniture." When they say dog friendly they mean it. I know masses of people with pointies who love it there and it's a measure of its popularity that it's pretty solidly booked even in the winter months.

It's also good in that unlike some dog friendly accommodation, you don't feel you are sacrificing comfort. Facilities are spotlessly clean, with all the mod cons inc dishwasher, six burner hob, ensuite etc etc. The only downside I can think of is that the TV reception is crap and mobile signal can be a bit iffy, but then it is in rural Pembrokeshire.

We had a lovely break in Sussex in Feb booking through Dogs Trust. I found out about it by posting on here. The company they seem to have teamed up with is Welcome Cottages but beware as not all of the cottages are dog friendly. We also noticed in the small print after our booking that the cottage owners only wanted small dogs (ours is large) but they were OK about it when we asked as ours is vv quiet and clean.

Cottage was lovely and reasonably priced. Good location and lots of dog friendly stuff to do in info and guest book.
